Educational objectives | The course aims to acquaint the student with the principles of Gerontology and Geriatrics, a completely autonomous discipline, with its own cultural and professional area. Discussed topics should bring to light the originality of the elderly patient, which differs from the adult in terms of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical care; the relationship between evidence-based medicine, medical complexity and geriatric medicine; the frail elderly; the geriatric syndromes; the main recurrent diseases in geriatrics; behavioral principles in geriatric medicine. Upon this knowledge the student must be able to recognize the unique aspects of aging, atypical presentation of many systemic and organic diseases and the complexity of multimorbidity, interactions between psychic and organic conditions able to amend the prognosis of diseases, the risks associated with polypharmacy, the value of multidimensional geriatric assessment in different health care settings. |
Prerequisites | Good knowledge of the main organic diseases and systemic syndromes in the internal medicine field is required in order to understand them and identify them in the elderly, the oldest old and the frail. Therefore, it is advisable to take the Gerontology and Geriatrics exam after having completed and/or acquired competencies related to the training objectives of Internal Medicine. |

Learning verification modality | EXAM CONDUCTION METHOD: Oral exam lasting approximately 20/30 minutes divided into questions relating to the main socio-health implications of aging at an individual and population level, gerontology (biological and physiological aspects of aging), geriatrics ( main geriatric syndromes, main age-related pathologies, and specificity of classification and care in the old-age patient, problems relating to multimorbidity and polypharmacy), multidimensional geriatric evaluation and management to support personalized and proactive medicine interventions, socio-health aspects in the care of the old age-preson, ethical and end-of-life aspects. TESTING OF CLINICAL SKILLS: knowledge and description of the scales/tests used in the multidimensional geriatric assessment and of the principles of behavior in the classification and management of the elderly patient, particularly if frail, in acute conditions. of chronicity and in different areas or health and welfare services. VERIFICATION OF THE SKILLS ACQUIRED DURING THE INTERNSHIP: discussion and/or simulation of a clinical case. To this intent, practical training is essential. This must be carried out before the oral exam at the S.S. Geriatrics (registration on line: http://terni.unipg.it/indexphp?page=medicina). |
