- THE SUFFERENCE OF PUNISHMENT. POLITICS, POWER AND JUSTICE The course aims, after a brief introduction to the status of Political Philosophy, to focus on one of the possible declinations of the articulated theme of power. In political orders, in fact, one of the areas in which force and violence of power coexist is undoubtedly the power to punish, destined to take charge of the rupture of the balance of coexistence due to a crime and to commensurate its response. In this regard, Paul Ricoeur speaks of a “paradox of punishment,” whereby that which claims maximally to rationality, and which wants to embody proportion and justice, is confronted with an “unobtainable rationality,” which ends up discovering itself viable only insofar as it remains violent. This course proposes to bring this area to the fore by pivoting precisely on the French philosopher's reflection: on the one hand, to delve into why the burden of suffering inflicted on the perpetrator seems natural to repair the suffering endured by the victim; on the other hand, to highlight the challenges this poses for political rationality, which is called upon to measure and proportion the burden of punishment with respect to the fundamental rights of the person and the extent of guilt.
