Contents
The course will analyse the Portuguese and Italian verbal systems from a contrastive perspective, with particular focus on tense and aspectual categories (tense, aspect, and aktionsart). In the section dedicated to contrastive morphological analysis between Portuguese and Italian, both theoretical and practical issues related to word formation in Portuguese and phraseology will be addressed. Subsequently, the topic of active translation will be covered, including the presentation and discussion of the main current lexicographical tools for translation into Portuguese. The final part of the course will be entirely devoted to translating various types of texts from Italian into Portuguese.

Educational objectives
The course has a dual objective: to guide students towards acquiring language skills up to a B1+ level and, at the same time, to provide the foundational knowledge for contrastive reflection on the syntactic structures of Portuguese and Italian. In this context, the course will offer an in-depth exploration of the morphosyntactic structures of Portuguese, aimed at supporting the acquisition and contrastive analysis of advanced communicative structures. By the end of the course, students are expected to have a solid understanding of the relevant metalanguage and the main aspects of a contrastive model between Portuguese and Italian. They should also demonstrate competence in all communicative skills corresponding to the B1+ level as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Additionally, students should be able to effectively use the necessary tools to translate from Italian into Portuguese and to produce accurate written texts in Portuguese.
Prerequisites
The student must have passed all the examinations scheduled for the first year, both in Portuguese and Brazilian Language and in Portuguese and Brazilian Literatures.
Teaching methods
The course includes lectures during the first semester and practice sessions distributed across both semesters. The official course delivered by the lecturer (lectures), amounting to a total of 9 ECTS credits, is complemented by eighty hours of practice sessions and language laboratory activities conducted at the University Language Centre (CLA). These activities provide essential tools and materials to help students reach the B1+ level of language proficiency, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which corresponds to the DEPLE (Diploma Elementar de Português Língua Estrangeira). It is expected that students will achieve the B1 level by the end of the first semester and the B1+ level in the second semester. Students are encouraged to register on the Unistudium platform, as all information regarding the courses (held in the Department) and the practice sessions (held at the University Language Centre) will be available on the respective platforms. These platforms will also host the core teaching materials necessary for successfully completing the courses, as well as information and suggestions for additional activities designed to enrich students’ linguistic and cultural training and to provide the most comprehensive overview possible of Portuguese and Brazilian language, literature, and culture.
Other information
Whenever possible, the courses will be complemented by extracurricular activities such as cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary seminars led by the course instructor or invited lecturers, film or documentary screenings, and translation workshops. These activities aim to strengthen and expand students’ language skills. The use of IT tools and multimedia resources is also planned, where feasible.
Learning verification modality
Final written exam with a single overall grade. The assessment consists of a single final grade, which will be officially recorded during one of the exam sessions scheduled in the university’s official calendar. At the end of the course, a mid-term exemption test is offered, which is reserved exclusively for students who have attended at least 70% of the classes. Non-attending students must contact the course instructor to agree on any supplementary study materials. At the University Language Centre (CLA), students must take a B1-level placement test at the end of each cycle of practice sessions; passing this test is a prerequisite for taking the written exam at the Department. The assessment process is therefore divided into several stages: For the Portuguese and Brazilian Language II course, coordinated by the course instructor, the written exam — which can be taken either as a regular exam or as an exemption test — lasts three hours and includes: closed-ended grammar questions and exercises; a short written composition in Portuguese on a current topic; the translation of a non-literary text from Italian into Portuguese. All exams and exemption tests may be taken with the help of a bilingual dictionary. The tests administered by the language instructors consist of a written and an oral exam designed to assess the student’s proficiency in the four language skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written production, and oral production. Specifically: the written component includes text interpretation and writing exercises; the oral component — which students can only take after achieving at least 18/30 in the written exam (three-hour duration) — mainly assesses the student’s ability to express themselves orally and demonstrate a command of Portuguese appropriate to the required level. The oral exam lasts approximately twenty minutes and consists of a guided conversation with the language instructor, aimed at evaluating the student’s accuracy, fluency, and communicative effectiveness. The final grade will be based on the results of the written and oral exams, combined with an assessment of the student’s participation in the practice activities provided on the Unistudium platform.
Extended program
The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and progressive understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of the Portuguese language, with particular focus on contrastive analysis with Italian, phraseology, and translation practice. Module I: Contrastive Analysis of the Portuguese and Italian Verb System This module offers a systematic exploration of the main features of the Portuguese verb system in comparison with Italian. Students will analyse verb tenses and moods, their functions, and their use in different registers, with special emphasis on tense, aspect, and modality. Practical activities will include sentence analysis and rewriting, as well as translation exercises aimed at highlighting key morphosyntactic differences and common challenges between the two languages. Module II: Contrastive Morphological Analysis and Phraseology This module focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of word formation in Portuguese, covering derivation, compounding, and inflection processes. In addition, students will study frequent phraseological structures and idiomatic expressions through concrete examples and guided linguistic reflection exercises. Module III: Active Translation from Italian into Portuguese Building on the knowledge acquired in the previous modules, this module introduces students to active translation practice. It includes the presentation and critical discussion of key lexicographic tools and digital resources useful for translating from Italian into Portuguese. Students will be trained to use dictionaries, corpora, and terminology databases effectively and will engage in hands-on translation exercises to tackle specific translation issues. The final part of the course is devoted to translating a wide variety of text types — including informational, popular science, technical, and current affairs texts — to develop practical translation skills and strengthen students’ autonomy as translators.
