Vittorio Sereni (1913-1983) in twentieth-century Italian poetry. Readings and commentaries on significant texts from the poet's collections. Sereni as a translator, essayist and reviewer. Sereni's reflections on poetry, its presence and its significance in the contemporary era. Sereni's relationships with masters and protagonists of twentieth-century Italian poetry (for example Umberto Saba, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Mario Luzi, Franco Fortini). Sereni's editorial activity. Intertextual relationships with foreign poetry. Sereni's influence on the Italian poetry of subsequent generations.
Reference texts
Vittorio Sereni, "Poesie e prose," a cura di Giulia Raboni, con uno scritto di P.V. Mengaldo, Mondadori 2013 (and subsequent editions). An anthology of 20th-century Italian poetry, in particular "Poeti italiani del Novecento," a cira di P.V. Mengaldo, Mondadori, Milan 1978 (and subsequent editions). Additional readings will be provided by the teacher during the course. Some materials will be shared on Unistudium.
Educational objectives
The course aims to provide students with critical and interpretative tools for reading twentieth-century poetry, deepening their understanding of Vittorio Sereni, one of the central authors in the development of Italian poetry in the mid-20th century. Knowledge of the relationship between twentieth-century Italian poetry and foreign models will also be fostered, including through Sereni's translations and readings.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the history of Italian literature. Non-native speakers are required to have at least a B2 level of Italian in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Teaching methods
Lectures; seminars; exercises; group discussions; use of audio and video testimonials. Lectures by external experts and visits to local cultural institutions are also possible.

Attendance is recommended. Students who attend less than 60% of lessons are considered non-attending and are required to contact the teacher before the exam to agree on the syllabus, including any additional readings. Learning verification modality
The final exam is oral and consists of an interview with open-ended questions on the course topics. Students' ability to read and comment on some of the poetic texts studied will also be tested. Both the questions and the reading of the texts are designed to assess the development of interpretive skills and independent critical thinking in approaching Italian literary texts.
