Analysis and in-depth study of the development of Luca Signorelli's artistic career and his relationship with Raphael during the latter's Umbrian period (1500-1504). The study will be conducted in relation to the research and new scientific results arising from the various exhibitions promoted in conjunction with the centenaries of the anniversary of the death of Raphael (2020), Perugino (2023) and Signorelli (2023). The intention is to set up the teaching program with frequent seminar opportunities, in which students will take an active part in bibliographic research, in didactic reports, in the preparation of didactic ppt, in the exhibition with on-site visits to monumental and museum sites. These occasions will be dedicated in particular to the study of the gonfalon of the SS. Raphael's Trinity from Città di Castello, which will be restored for the major Raphael exhibition in New York (Spring 2026), and the Altarpiece of the Coronation of the Virgin from Monteluce, studied for the upcoming exhibition in the Capitular Museum of the Cathedral of Perugia (September 2025-January 2026).

Educational objectives
The discipline of History of Modern Art II represents an optional choice and constitutes the in-depth study of a subject already covered, thus becoming a further opportunity to refine one's study skills and mature one's interpretative ability. It is therefore intended to help students achieve a more mature historical-critical awareness of the various processes of figurative elaboration that involved Luca Signorelli, his formative experience with Perugino, his positioning as a fundamental personality in the shift between a naturalistic but iconic figurative language such as that of Perugino and the new sixteenth-century interest in anatomy and the body in space, together with the search for emotional expressions. It is thus intended to provide the tools to bring to maturity a more conscious ability to read works, an analysis of figurative experiences accompanied by an adequate methodological awareness, a development of autonomous research and elaboration skills. Knowledge Acquire a more mature knowledge of this protagonist of the history of Italian art, of his manner of breaking away developed especially in the first phase of his career, from his training with Piero della Francesca, his participation in the construction of the Sistine Chapel, to the works of the 90s close to Perugino, up to the intense relationship with the young Raphael. Skills Know how to frame the activity of this author and his relationship with Raphael, his works and the construction sites of which he was a protagonist, in relation to the original historical, liturgical, environmental contexts. In-depth study of the technical and conservation conditions of his works, of their iconographic reading, of their critical-bibliographic fortune, of the varied role of patrons and collectors. Ability Develop an adequate ability to develop autonomous research paths and historical-critical in-depth analysis in view of the preparation of the master's thesis. These skills will be developed through participation in seminar groups that will promote the formation of autonomous bibliographic research paths, analysis and synthesis processes, and didactic and narrative presentation skills.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of the main figurative phenomena of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons with interactive dynamics and frequent involvement of students. Educational visits to the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria and to the main museums where Raphael's works are preserved.
