Contents
The course deals with selected issues of international and EU environmental and agri-food law. Particular attention is paid to environmental, social and cultural sustainability, also in light of the EU From Farm to Fork strategy and of the 2030 Agenda. The course will include seminars within the framework of the Jean Monnet module funded by the European Union “ECO-PoLeIS” – Participatory and Legal Instruments for Climate Neutral and Smart Cities (Jean Monnet Module - Project: 101176263, ERASMUS-JMO-2024-HEI-TCH-RSCH).

Educational objectives
The course aims to provide theoretical and disciplinary knowledge relating to the international and EU regulatory framework on agriculture and food, with particular reference to the environmental and social sustainability of the agri-food system.

The course includes lectures, seminars and exercises.
Other information
Attending students will have the opportunity to make a presentation in class (individually in pairs), which will be taken into consideration for the final evaluation.
Learning verification modality
The exam includes a final oral examination, which consists of a discussion-interview on the topics covered in the texts and the teaching materials included in the online platform (and, for attending students, on the topics discussed in class). The examination aims to ascertain the level of knowledge and the ability to understand and summarize achieved by the student, as well as his/her ability to communicate what has been acquired with proper language. Interdisciplinary connections are appreciated. The length of the exam and the number of questions vary depending on the progress of the exam; typically there are at least three questions relating to the three modules of the course. Extended program
The relevant international law provisions will be examined, starting with international trade agreements concerning trade in agricultural products, both in the WTO context (Agreement on Agriculture, SPS Agreement, TRIPS Agreement) and at bilateral level (free trade agreements), as well as the role of the various international cooperation instruments to promote food security. In this context, particular attention will be paid to the legal regime of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (Nagoya Convention and FAO Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources), the role of international law in the protection of traditional knowledge of agricultural interest, the emergence of farmers’ rights and the issues related to the management of water for irrigation purposes. As far as EU law is concerned, articles 38-44 of the TFEU and the main EU acts relating to the CAP will be analyzed. Particular attention will be also paid to the rural development policy, and the “From Farm to Fork” strategy. The course will examine EU rules on the quality of agri-food products and their free circulation, on GMOs and some aspects of EU legislation on food safety and risk management. Finally, the impact on the agri-food market of recent European regulations on combating greenwashing (Taxonomy Regulation, Green Claims Directive, ESG Rating Regulation), due diligence (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive) and corporate sustainability reporting. For attending students, in the framework of the Jean Monnet Module EcoPoleis, in-depth studies will be carried out on the subject of environmental justice and participatory democracy in the context of the European Union Green Deal.

The course examines many issues falling within the SDGs, with particular reference to the sustainability of agriculture and the right to food, the fight against climate change, the right to water.
