- The course offers a comprehensive overview of International Human Rights Law-IHRL (history and theory of human rights, origins and evolution of the International law of Human Rights, influence of IHRL on the international legal system, sources of IHRL) and of the main legal and institutional international protection systems within the United Nations and under regional international organizations, with a focus on the European region. It then deals with the obligations stemming from the international human rights rules and proposes the thematic study of some of the main human rights protected at international level, also through case studies.

- The international protection of human rights is a fundamental dimension of international cooperation, and the respect of human rights is a crucial issue in international relations . Anyone willing to work in or on these fields at a high level, operationally or tehoretically, must have a deep knowledge and comprehension of such topic. The course provides the tools to acquire the necessary skills within the Master's degree course in International Relations.
At the end of the Course, the student will have acquired: - knowledge of the theoretical and historical foundation of the international protection of human rights; - an understanding of the influence of international human rights law on international law more generally; - knowledge of the main international and European systems of protection of human rights, as regards both the normative and the institutional dimension; - knowledge of the content of the main fundamental human rights internationally protected and of the ensuing States’ obligations; - the ability to understand and identify the methodology applied by judges and scholars to interpret, implement and evaluate the relevant norms; - the ability to apply this knowledge to practical current cases in the international and national experience. - Prerequisites

- Face-to-face lectures with the support of power-point slides and other audio-video materials; case-studies analysis
- Learning verification modality
- Oral exam, consisting in a discussion of about 20 minutes on topics dealt with during the course
The test aims to verify the level of knowledge acquired, the ability to critically discuss the course topics, and the ability to present them with clarity and property of language.
For attending students: participation in the Course, also with in-class presentations on specific topics, will be also assessed as part of the overall evaluation. - Extended program

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS LAW: Origins and evolution of IHRL; the influence of IHRL on the international legal system and on specific branches of international law; sources of IHRL.
INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS PROTECTION SYSTEMS. - The United Nations System: Human rights treaties promoted by the United Nations and related control bodies and procedures; control bodies and procedures based on the United Nations Charter (Human Rights Council and related procedures; Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; other bodies and institutions); - The European human rights system: a) Council of Europe (European Convention and European Court of Human Rights; other human rights conventions); b) European Union; - Other regional human rights systems.
INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND STATE OBLIGATIONS: Categories of human rights and the question of a hierarchy among rights; Obligations stemming from human rights norms: typology and spatial scope of application; Study of particulare internationally protected human rights, also through case studies taken from current events. - Obiettivi Agenda 2030 per lo sviluppo sostenibile
