- Religious poetry of popular tone from its origins to the fifteenth century. The development of vernacular poetic production as dissemination and irradiation of mystical, theological and uplifting themes to a non-specialist audience. The chronological span of poetic production proposed for study extends form Saint Francis (“Laudes creaturarum”) to Girolamo Savonarola. Considerable importance will be given to the study of laude, from thos of the confraternities to the personal laudary of Iacopone da Todi up to the genre’s fifteenth-century developments. Other areas considered will be fourteenth-century religious cantari and fifteenth-century Florentine sacred plays, with readings and commentaries on significant texts.
- Reference texts
- "Iacopone da Todi e la poesia religiosa del Duecento", introduzione, scelta antologica e commento a cura di P. Canettieri, Rizzoli 2001 (and subsequent editions); the sections to be explored will be indicated by the teacher during the course. A textbook of your choice of Italian literature from the origins to the fifteenth century: the sections to be covered will be specified by the teacher during the course. Other texts will be shared by the teacher on Unistudium.
- Educational objectives
- The course aims to provide students with the necessary tools (linguistic, rhetorical, and cultural) to read, comment on, and discuss vernacular poetic texts from their origins to the fifteenth century. This will foster their ability to interpret works from the earliest phase of Italian literature and will foster critical thinking. Textual, historical-literary and cultural knowledge will be developed, in relation to literary genres and their transformation and evolution over time.
- Prerequisites
- It is recommended that students have passed an exam in Italian Literature or Philology of Italian Literature. Non-native speakers are required to have at least a B2 level of Italian in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Teaching methods
- Lectures; seminars; group discussions and exercises. Further study opportunities may include guest speakers and educational visits to local cultural institutions.

- Attendance is recommended. Students who attend less than 60% of classes are considered non-attending and are required to contact the teacher before the exam to discuss the syllabus, including possible additional readings. - Learning verification modality
- The final exam will be oral and will consist of an interview with open-ended questions and the reading and commentary of selected passages from the texts of the course. Both the questions and the reading and commentary of the texts will assess the knowledge acquired and the critical skills developed. - Religious poetry of popular tone from its origins to the fifteenth century. Main literary genres (lauda, ¿¿religious cantare, sacred play). Reading and commentary on significant texts by both recognized and anonymous authors. Culture, language, and style characteristic of the literary genres explored.
