- Contents
- The course aims to provide engineering students with theoretical and technical concepts relating to the fundamentals of measurement, error theory, measurement instrumentation, model testing, experimental control of existing structures, and acceptance criteria for structural materials in new construction. Information is also provided on structural testing, the final administrative step required to authorize the use of the building.

- The course aims to provide a broad, though not exhaustive, overview of investigation and inspection techniques for civil engineering structures. For some techniques, the level of detail will allow students to directly perform such investigations and inspections and evaluate the results.
- Prerequisites
- Knowledge of materials and structural mechanics.
- Teaching methods
- Frontal lessons.
- Other information
- Basic knowledge on the dynamics of structures, even if not compulsory, facilitates the learning of the subject.
- Learning verification modality
- The exam includes an oral test. This test consists of a discussion lasting about 30 minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge of the theoretical-methodological contents of the course with particular reference to the design of experimental investigations and the interpretation of the results obtained.
- Extended program
- Fundamentals of measurement, dimensions, and dimensional equations. Introduction to probability and statistics for the analysis of experimental data. General information on measurement instruments. Error theory. Experimentation on models and similarity laws. Examples of model experiments. Examples of application of similarity laws. Instruments for measuring deformation and displacement. Instruments for measuring velocity and acceleration. Instruments for measuring force. Testing of concrete. Testing of masonry. Static testing of buildings. Acceptance inspection of materials. Load tests. Examples of investigations and load tests. Inspection of welds.
