Biotransformation of the active ingredients in the complementary medicines and their possible toxic effects.
Occurrence of residues and contaminants in medicinal herbs: source, class of contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins..) and regulatory limits. Adverse effects of these xenobiotic for the human health.

Educational objectives
One of the goals of the course is to provide information about the biotransformation reactions of the active ingredients with particular attention for the possible toxic effects of some metabolites.
Another topic is to focus critical aspects in terms of the presence of contaminants in botanicals, with respect to their origin, presence in the environment or during the manufacturing process.

The student is requested to know Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Botany
