Contents
The course of Business Economics and Organization is in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree Course in Mechanical Engineering - Management Address.
The course is aimed at providing basic knowledge of business phenomena and presents the concepts, logics and analysis tools developed by business economics that are useful for the student to approach the business and organizational issues with the necessary maturity and theoretical vision.
The disciplinary approach is characterized by an economic-social perspective of the topics addressed, integrating and enhancing the overall training of the student in Mechanical Engineering - Management Address. The course therefore proposes a vision of the company and its basic objectives useful to enhance the value of engineering knowledge and can facilitate a more targeted thematic choice of orientation for future academic choices.
To this end, the program is developed in two parts. The first part focuses on the general characteristics of the company in its management, organization and accounting profiles.
The second part contains some conceptual insights related to the theme of corporate strategy and presents the main theoretical and application references regarding strategic and performance analysis.

Educational objectives
The course aims to provide awareness of the basic characteristics of the business phenomenon, in its theoretical and empirical profiles. More specifically, with reference to the first part, learning outcomes are connected to the acquisition of the following knowledge and skills:
- knowledge of the concept of the company and the various types of organizations;
- ability to identify corporate, legal and economic subjects;
- knowledge of management cycles, investment and financing dynamics; - ability to analyze the company as a system in its specialization contents by functional areas and company organization;
- knowledge of the accounting logic and ability to read a financial statement;
- understanding of economic and financial dynamics and analysis of general equilibrium conditions.
With reference to the second part:
- knowledge of the main interpretative tools developed within the corporate strategy;
- ability to identify and structure the logical steps that lead to the elaboration of a strategic analysis;
- ability to identify the logics that oversee the setting of a company's objectives, values and results;
- knowledge of the main characteristics of the tools for analyzing the external environment, the sector and competitors, resources, skills and business processes;
- ability to analyze company performance in a strategic perspective.

Teaching methods
The teaching approach is based on lectures, in-depth seminars, presentation and discussion of theoretical concepts and business cases.

Learning verification modality
In the ordinary situation the assessment of students’ proficiency will be performed through a written test, consisting of three open questions, one of which could include a numerical exercise.
The test will evaluate:
- technical knowledge of specific topics;
- the ability to frame the topics within the overall framework of the program;
- the ability to connect the various themes and explain the underlying logic.
The duration of the exam is one hour and half and each questions account for one third on the total grade.
If the regulations provide some restrictions on face-to-face exams and the exam will be performed online, the written test can be partially replaced by the preparation of a project work to be discussed during the oral test, integrated by two open questions on the other parts of the program.

PART 1 – Business economics and the study perspectives of organization, management and accounting

Introductory concepts. Economic activity and business. Classification of economic entities.
Economic subject and legal subject. The different legal forms of business.
Management cycle. Equity and external financial support. Technical forms of external financial support. Technical and financial investments.
Business as a “system”. Functional areas and organization.
Accounting logic and procedures. Some examples of accounting. Focus on financial statement.
Economic and financial dynamic. Costs and revenues. The different form of profit. Economic and financial equations.

PART 2 – Business strategy and performance analysis

Strategy and strategic management. Evolution of strategy concept. From long range planning to strategic management. The role of strategy analysis.
Qualitative perspective of analysis. Logic and tools to analyse long term objectives, external and internal environment. Integrating external analysis and internal analysis: SWOT analysis, critical success factors, business model, entrepreneurial formula.
