Synthetic program: 1. the linguistic changes that have occurred in the old and medieval Germanic languages; 2. the principal texts written in these languages; 3. aspects of the Germanic culture (pre-Christian religion, runes, Christianisation, literacy); 4. relationship between Germanic and other cultures (in particular the Greek and Latin ones).

Educational objectives
Knowledge of program and specific bibliography. In particular, s/he should know 1. the linguistic changes that have occurred in the old and medieval Germanic languages; 2. the principal texts written in these languages; 3. aspects of the Germanic culture (pre-Christian religion, runes, Christianisation, literacy); 4. relationship between Germanic and other cultures (in particular the Greek and Latin ones).
Prerequisites

Prerequisites are not necessary. A basic knowledge of linguistics is desirable.
Teaching methods
Teaching hours in classroom, with help of slides.
Other information

Attendance at the course is highly recommended.
Learning verification modality
The final exam will be oral (at least three questions on the program). The student should be able to answer the questions confidently and knowledgeably.
Extended program

Main topics of the course: description of the principal features of the old and medieval Germanic languages; examination of their principal changes in respect to other Indo-European languages; analysis of parts of the most important Old Germanic texts: the Gothic Bible, the Old English Beowulf, the Old Saxon Heliand, the Old German Hildebrandslied and the Old Norse sagas; old Germanic religion, runes, Christianisation of the Germanic peoples; literacy; relationship between Germanic and classical cultures.
