Educational objectives
The course aims to introduce the key notions and methods of
Philosophyof Language, with specific regard to its syntactical, semantical
and pragmaticalarticulations. Students are expected to acquire basic
notions of theresearch field, ability to enucleate problems and itineraries
for theirpossible solutions, and a critical awareness as differentaspects
relative to language and theories of mind related to its functions and uses are concerned, as it can be seen fromboth its
historical and theorical developments.

Face to face lessons for both Part A and B of the Course
Other information
Part of lessons shall be dedicated to reading and analysing pages from the classical texts of Philosophy of Language, using material given by the teacher and aiming to discuss together selected itemsin seminar form.

Extended program
A. An Introduction to philosophy of language. 1) Philosophical theories ofmeaning and reference (Frege, Russell, 1st Wittgenstein, Carnap) 2)Linguistic action (2 nd Wittgenstein, Austin, Grice, Searle) 3) Languageand communication (indeterminacy of translation and radicalinterpretation, holism in Quine and Davidson) 4) The cognitive turn in analytical philosophy of language (Putnam, Fodor, functionalism and cognitive sciences) 5) Meaning and inferential role (Dummett, Brandom);
B.The second part B of the course shall be dedicated to analyse issues in question within contemporary debate on the relationship among language/mind/understanding, taking into account the cognitive perspective of specific mind-models ruling the use of human language in meaning and understanding (CAPUTO/BARBERO 2018), but also the main frame of philosophy of mind of analytical heritage (DI FRANCESCO/MARRAFFA/TOMASETTA 2017) and the communicative-pragmatic approach(PATERNOSTER/PISANTY 2019) ..
