- Educational objectives
- The course aims to provide students the ability to apply the knowledge acquired during each discipline lectures, such as familiarity with the microbiology laboratory, familiarity with the use of some of the main methods applied in the biological chemistry, ability to relate anatomical organization to functional and evolutionary aspects, to acquire skills in taxonomic identification of plankton species using the dichotomous keys and in biochemical methods as prognostic tools of environmental health.
- Prerequisites
- In order to benefit from the laboratory experiments on the topics listed in the program, students must have acquired basic knowledge on Microbiology, Comparative Anatomy, Biological Chemistry, Ecology.
- Teaching methods
- The course is organized in laboratory experiments regarding the following disciplines: Microbiology, Comparative Anatomy, Biochemical Chemistry, , Ecology. Students will follow each discipline laboratory for 6 hours.
- Learning verification modality
- For the attainment of the credits programmed for this teaching (2 credits-24 hours) it is necessary to attend at least 75% of the total number of hours, therefore at least 18 hours. The attendance will be assessed by roll call and signature capture.
- Extended program
- MICROBIOLOGY: Laboratory methods for the study of microorganisms. Microscopy, direct and staining methods. Main culture techniques for bacterial isolation, count and presumptive identification.
COMPARATIVE ANATOMY: Recognition and comparison of microscopic and macroscopic specimens from embryonic and adult vertebrates.
BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY: Spectrophotometric determination of proteins in cell extracts, including the construction of calibration curve.
ECOLOGY: Biodiversity of freshwater plankton based on taxonomic and biochemical investigation: taxonomic identification, application of diversity indices and measurement of biomarkers of environmental contamination.
