Educational objectives
The main objective of this course is to provide to students the basic knowledge about the structure and mechanical-, physical-, chemical-properties of organic macromolecules, to rationally elaborate selection criteria for their use in the fields of application discussed during lectures, as well as to evaluate their disposal in the environment.
The main knowledge acquired will be:
-basic knowledge of the mechanical, chemical, pjysical properties of organic macromolecules
-knowledge of the main classes of organic polymers
-knowledge of the definition of bioplastics, biodegradability, compostability
-knowledge of the main classes of bioplastics
-knowledge to read into structure-properties relationships of (bio)polymers
-knowlege to evaluate the sustainability of a polymeric material, to plan its production from renewable resources, to evaluate its application and environmental fate.
-knowledge to understand the interaction of a (bio)polymeric material with- and its impact on the environment during the life cycle
Prerequisites
Fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry
Teaching methods
Face-to-face lectures on all the topics of the course.
Learning verification modality
Oral exam. Time of duration: about 30 min. The exam will consist of open questions aiming at assessing the level of knowledge/expertise achieved by the student on the course topics. Further, through the exam will be evaluated the student's communication skills and ability of logically organize the discussion.
Extended program
1. Elements of macromolecular chemistry. general concepts, polymerization reactions, structure-properties correlations for the main classes of organic polymers.
2. Bio-plastics: definitions and regulations; biodegradability and compostability
3. Main classes of bio-plastics
4. Bio-polymers for electronics and bioelectronics
5. Sustainability and life-cycle assessment of (bio)polymers.
