Contents | Topics covered in this course include: basic principles of epidemiology, measures of disease frequency, epidemiologic study designs, observational and experimental epidemiology, CBPR (Community-based participatory research), confounding bias, causality and causal inference, evidence-based medicine, reviews, meta-analysis and ethical issues in epidemiologic research. |

Educational objectives | By the end of this course students will develop the ability to: describe and calculate epidemiological measures used to define and quantify health problems in and across defined populations; describe the range of epidemiologic study designs and be able to evaluate the strengths and limitations of each; identify and describe the impact of bias and confounding in epidemiologic studies; critically read and evaluate epidemiologic studies in the medical or public health literature. |

Extended program | Epidemiology: history, definition and scope. Sources of epidemiological data. Rates of morbidity and mortality. Mortality tables. Population pyramids. Study design: observational and experimental epidemiology. Ecological studies. Cross-sectional studies. Measures of disease frequency: prevalence and incidence. Analytical epidemiology: cohort and case-control studies. Causal and/or noncausal association. Evaluation of relative risk (RR) and odds-ratio (OR); attributable risk. Experimental epidemiology: preventive trials, randomized clinical trials, megatrials, and Community-based participatory research. Molecular epidemiology (biomarkers). Evidence-based medicine: systematic reviews and meta-analysis. |
