Contents The course allows the student to acquire knowledge related to the following topics:
-Historical evolution of contexts and methods of care in Mental Health.
- Principles of nursing care in local, semi-residential and hospital services, the network of services and legislative aspects.
-Theories of nursing applied to psychiatry.
-H. Peplau: the psychodynamic model
- Role of the nurse in the therapeutic relationship.
- Plans of assistance to the patient with mental disorders.
- Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment Services NO-restraint
-Rehabilitation for the patient with mental illness.

Educational objectives The main educational objective of the course is to allow the student to know and understand the health problems of the person with mental disorders, as well as to predict and describe the nursing interventions to deal with them, taking into account the patient's concrete situation.
The main knowledge acquired will be:
- theoretical-practical bases of nursing care in a psychiatric setting
-H. Peplau: the psychodynamic model
- Role of the nurse in the therapeutic relationship.
- Plans of assistance to the patient with mental disorders.
-Rehabilitation for the patient with mental illness.
The main skills will be:
- detect the needs of the person affected by psychiatric problems,
- plan to implement and evaluate the most suitable assistance interventions to achieve the objectives
- understand the meaning of teamwork as a fundamental requirement for psychiatric care;
-involve the patient's family members in assistance.
Teaching methods The course is organized as follows: frontal lessons on all the course topics, guided discussions, exercises in small groups, bibliographic research.
Learning verification modality The exam includes an oral test. The oral exam consists of a discussion lasting about 10/15 minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding reached by the student on the theoretical and methodological contents indicated in the program. The oral test will also allow to verify the student's communication skills with language properties and autonomous organization of the exhibition on the same theoretical topics.
