Contents | Starting from the meaning of epidemiology compared with the evolution of the concepts of health and disease, the course will provide a deep knowledge of the epidemiological research methods also through the clarification of the links with the health statistics. Room will be offered to the placement of epidemiology in the healthcare system with particular reference to nursing skills |
Reference texts | R. Beglehole, R. Bonita, T. Kjellstroem, Epidemiologia di base, Editoriale Fernando Folini (online) C. Signorelli, Elementi di metodologia epidemiologica, Società Editrice Universo N. Comodo, G. Maciocco, Igiene e sanità pubblica. Educational objectives | At the end of the course, you will develop a knowledge of the basic theoretical and methodological principles of epidemiology and the advantages and disadvantages of epidemiological methods. There will also be adequate knowledge of the location of epidemiology as objectives and services in the national health system |
Prerequisites | none |
Teaching methods | lessons Group work Classroom exercise |
Learning verification modality | The final evaluation will aim to ascertain the knowledge learned in the course with respect to the topics indicated in the program. The assessment test will take place in written form. The test has two parts: a. an application and calculation exercise, b. a list of questions with multiple choice answers. |
Extended program | 1. Definition of epidemiology 2. Reference to the models of disease and health 3. The state of health of the population: national and international epidemiological profile 4. Elements of Demography for epidemiological knowledge 5. How epidemiology measures health phenomena: absolute number, ratio, proportion, rate 6. Morbidity and Mortality 7. Incidence and Prevalence 8. Crude rate and specific rates, standardization of rates 9. Comparison of rates 10. Association between phenomena 11. The concept of risk: definition 12. The risk factors 13. Risk measures 14. The risk communication (outline) 15. How epidemiology studies health and disease phenomena 16. Observational and experimental study design 17. Observational study design: descriptive and analytical studies 18. Experimental study design 19. The collection of epidemiological data: data sources 20. Interpretation of epidemiological data: bias and confounding factors 21. Epidemiology in the Health Service and in the nursing profession |
