Extended program
The course aims to offer theoretical and analytical foundations for a better understanding of the process of European economic integration. It considers the various phases, forms and characteristics of European economic integration, starting from the creation of the European Economic Community in 1958 until today. The implementation of the “four liberties” is analyzed in detail – the free movement of goods, services, capital and labour – in order to understand the functioning of the Internal Market. The course also analyses the main economic policies applied by the EU in various sectors (Common Agricultural Policy, Regional Policy). Special attention is dedicated to integration processes after the Maastricht Treaty, particularly to the European Monetary Union, the 2004/07 EU enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe and economic policies in Europe after the recent global economic crisis.
The following topics will be covered:
1. Basic definitions, concepts and brief history of European integration
2. The theory of international trade and European integration
3. The Single European Market
4. Long-term strategies of the EU (Lisbon Strategy, Europe 2020)
5. Labour mobility and migrations
6. European economic and monetary union: history, theoretical foundations, institutional structure and current instruments
7. The EU budget
8. The Common Agricultural Policy
9. Regional policies of the EU

11. EU’s competition policy
12. EU enlargement to Eastern Europe
