The course focuses on some key aspects of the French and Francophone language and civilisation. Educational objectives
The course aims at developing intermediate level language competence and skills, as well as fostering abilities and knowledge regarding text-typological and lexicogrammatical features of the French used in media and international political communication.The main acquired knowledge will be:- Knowledge of the basic vocabulary of French media, political and diplomatic language- Knowledge of the main syntactical structures, especially as relevant to media, political and diplomatic discourse- Knowledge of the main rhetorical structures and figures used in political and media language- Elements of discourse analysis- Knowledge of the main features of French institutions- Knowledge of the main features of the main Francophone international organisations.The main acquired skills will be:- Reading comprehension skills- Listening comprehension skills- reading and listening skills- speaking and writing accurately- Autonomous learning and self study skills.
Prerequisites
In order to attend the course, which takes place in the third year, and in any case to take the exam, students must have obtained an B1 certificate, which can be obtained at the University Language Center (CLA) during the second year. The certificate, which expires after 2 years, does not entitle students to credits, it is a pre-requisite for attending the course offered by the Department. The following international certificates of French are accepted in place of the CLA B1 certificate: DELF (B1 or higher), DALF. International certificates must be presented to the professor in the first year, or not later than the first day of class.
Teaching methods
The course comprises lectures with audiovisual material (slides and videos), and practical training carried out individually, in pairs and in groups.

Learning verification modality
Assessment criteria differ for attending and non-attending students.Attending students: The overall evaluation is determined by a written mid-term exam and an oral exam at the end of the course. The 90-minute written exam includes a compte rendu de texte, some lexical and reformulation exercises and a few open questions equally related to the material analysed during the course.The oral exam consists of an interview of about 10-15 minutes. Students are asked questions on the content of the program covered in the second part of the course.On the whole, the exams are aimed at testing reading comprehension skills, the ability to apply the acquired knowledge for the critical analysis of written documents and the capacity to communicate appropriately and express a personal point of view in the foreign language. The overall evaluation takes into account the score of the written exam, the oral assessment and also the score of the CLA B1 certificate. The written exam score is valid up to November 2018.Non-attending students: The evaluation will be determined by an oral exam. The interview, which lasts about 20-25 minutes, will cover the contents of the course. Students will have to answer open questions and show they have read and fully understood the course materials. Furthermore, they will have to recognize different textual features and the main figures of speech used in the texts analysed during the course. The exam is aimed at testing reading comprehension skills, the ability to apply the acquired knowledge for the critical analysis of written documents and the capacity to communicate appropriately and express a personal point of view in the foreign language. The overall evaluation takes into account the score of the oral exam and the score of the CLA B1 certificate.
Extended program
The course focuses on some key aspects of the French and Francophone language and civilisation. The activities are based on the analysis of authentic written and audiovisual texts. The documents are used as input for analysis in order to develop not only reading and listening comprehension skills, but also oral and written production skills.
