Contents
The course is focused to allow basics on specific biotechnologies for production of high-quality Woody plants.
Micropropagation is proposed as the main in vitro culture technique for the nursery productions. Applicative potentialities of innovative technologies for management of plant material are described.
Reference texts
The teacher provides the slides of course and scientific papers as research materials.
For detailed study the follow scientific texts can be consulted:

Educational objectives
The teaching provides to the students theoretical knowledges and practical capabilities related to specific biotechnology applications for production of high quality woody plants through the vegetative propagation. The basics of in vitro cultures (as the totipotency, the regenerative processes and the growing conditions) and the main techniques, as the micropropagation, will be addressed with particular focus on their nursery applications. Innovative techniques and technologies to improve the management of vitro-derived plant material will be described.
Prerequisites
The students should know specific basis on plant propagation and in vitro culture, in order to understand the matter and apply the techniques described during the course. It's recommended they learn specific knowledges about botany, chemistry, woody plants cultivation and propagation and tissue culture techniques.
Teaching methods
The course is divided in lectures, practical training at the laboratory of "in vitro cultures" of DSA3, technical guided visits and seminars.
Other information
Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, University of Perugia, Borgo XX Giugno 74, Perugia.
Optionale attendance.
Office hours: every day by appointment.
Learning verification modality
Final oral examination according to the academic calendar.
The evaluation will be conducted on the base of oral examination (about 50 minutes), in the form of questions and ansewrs, with the aim to verify theoretical knowledge on the matter of teaching and to check the ability to propose solutions on study cases connected to the course.
Extended program
Lectures: Introduction to biotechnologies and woody plant species. Basics of in vitro culture techniques and micropropagation (totipotency and regenerative processes). In vitro cultures for mass propagation of woody plants. Technical aspects and applicative potentialities of micropropagation for the nursery activities. Organization of a commercial laboratory of in vitro cultures. Aspects of commercial micropropagation. Limits and potentialities of regenerative processes. Plant recovery. Methodological innovations to improve the production of plant material in the nurseries by micropropagation. Innovative technologies for management, conservation, storage and diffusion of plant germplasm. Applicative potentiality of "multifunctional capsules" and "synthetic seeds". Innovations for management of vitro-derived material in ex vitro conditions.
Practical activities: Practice in laboratory and aseptic manipulations (at DSA3 of University of Perugia). Reading and evaluation of scientific references in order to technical problems of laboratory. Guided visits to nurseries and commercial laboratories. Tutorials and seminars.
