- D1-KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student should :
- know the criteria to be considered to assess the health and welfare of animals in farms
- be able in identifying gross lesions that can be related to infectious and not infectious diseases present at necropsy
- know the main laboratory diagnostic procedures applied in the poultry diagnosis
- know vaccination and therapeutic protocols.
- know the main principles of Biosecurity applied to the poultry production chain
D2-APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student should be able :
- to assess the state of health and well-being of birds during inspections in farms
-to make a diagnosis (including suspicion) by autopsy
- to carry out a selected collection of biological and non biological samples for diagnostic assessment by laboratory procedures
- to identify the suitable therapeutic and / or prophylactic response to the diagnosis
D4) MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training activity the student should be able:
-to make a diagnosis i.
- to apply vaccination and therapy protocols
- to identify corrective solutions to be applied to animals and environment in order to optimize biosecurity levels

The student must have knowledge concerning:
- Organization of the National and International Health System
- National surveillance plans for Salmonellosis and avian Flu in the routine and in emergency conditions

- Urban Hygiene in relation to control of urban pigeon population
D2- APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training activity, the student should have acquired the skills related to public and free veterinarians concerning:
-surveillance plans for avian Flu and Salmonella
- measures to be applied in control urban pigeon populations
D3-MAKING JUDGMENT
The training activity must enable the student to:
- assess any critical situation in the case of surveillance programs for Avian Influenza and Salmonellosis
- to implement safety measures in case of emergency situations such as flu
-to know how to discern among several possible corrective solutions for the control of urban populations of pigeons

The student should be able to behave as a public veterinarian, demonstrating language properties and to support an useful dialogue with people with the same or different scientific background / or with the urban citizen

At the end of the training the student should have the need to update in the legislative field due to the continuous evolution changes in this issue . - Prerequisites

Since the objective of the teaching is to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the poultry sector , the student must have a scientific background regarding:
1) Nutrition and avian technology (rearing systems) as several diseases are caused by inadequate management ;
2) Anatomy and physiology of birds since several pathologies are favored by their anatomical and physiological characteristics
3) Microbiology and Anatomical Pathology: the diagnosis on the birds is firstly clinical and anatomic pathological so that the student must be able, by clinical signs and gross changes in various organs, to correlate them to infectious and not (infectious) causes - Teaching methods
- THEORETICAL LESSONS: held in the classroom, concern mainly infectious and non-infectious diseases. Organization of the industrial poultry sector and the main rearing systems in poultry are reviewed
PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES
-Visits in commercial poultry farms .
-Clinical approach with unconventional birds (prey, wild and pet birds )
-Execution of autopsies in commercial birds and unconventional birds - Other information
- Attending seminars on veterinary public health issues concerning poultry .
Clinical rotation activities include clinical examinations and autopsies regarding pet birds and non-conventional birds in order to allow the student to acquire knowledge concerning diagnostic approaches in these species. - Learning verification modality
- The exam is oral , practical (Avian Pathology ), and written (VeterinaryPublic Health). The oral exam evaluates the theoretical knowledge concerning
1) Infectious and not-infectious diseases
2) Urban hygiene issues
The practical exam of Avian Pathology consists of evaluating the student's ability to perform autopsies and to identify any gross lesions suggestive of a
suspicion diagnosis . The knowledge of laboratory procedures
for diagnostic assessment are also tested . It is possible the use of slides illustrating gross lesions suggestive of diseases affecting avian species.
The exam in Veterinary public health includes 15 multiple choice questions concerning urban hygiene issues , Salmonella and Flu surveillance plans, application Veterinary Police Rules in notifiable infection disease in birds
The total exam lasts about 60 minutes. For the final evaluation, the exam commission consists of 2 professors, at least
The test is evaluated on the basis of following elements:
- Argumentative and executive rigor. From 2 to 5 points
- Completeness - From 2 to 5 points
Language skills . From 2 to 5 points
Depth of analysis and connection capacity. From 2 to 5 points. The knowledge determined by the written and oral tests (69%) and the practical one (31%) contribute to the determination of the vote
