Contents
Presentation of the course (framing of the discipline, educational path, purposes). Statutory Boards and other professional associations: organizational structures at central and peripheral levels. The Code of Conducts: guidelines for veterinary practitioners. Animal Protection: general, the experimental animals, animals in intensive farming, stray dog and cat laws. Drugs for veterinary use: general aspects, prescription modality, pharmacovigilance. The sale of animals: general aspects. The Veterinarian as a consultant and part (CTU) at the Courts of Justice.

material provided by the teacher: the student will be given the powerpoint presentations of lectures, accompanied by the full text of the main legislation and articles on the topics, published in national and international papers
Educational objectives
D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must have knowledge of:
- the Code of Conduct
- the basics of professional liability
- the legislation concerning the regulation of animal drugs
- the legislation on animal welfare.

D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- apply the principle of good practice in clinical setting;
- prescribe drugs according to the law
- write a clinical record/certificate
- manage a healthcare facility in compliance with legislation.

D3 - MAKING JUDGEMENT
At the end of the training the student will be able to make any decision according to scientific knowledge, as well as to the respect for professional ethics and current legislation.

D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- relate with other colleagues, owners and Authorities;
- to communicate “bad news” to the customer.

D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- consult and understand normative dictations, so as to employ them in routinary practice
- manage a sufficiently broad mastery of these topics to guarantee and acceptable basis for continuing professional updating

- practical activity based on simulation of particular situations (how to handle the owner or how to relate to other colleagues) and how to draft clinical records.

- The code of conduct and good practice: general guidelines and details for the veterinary practitioner (2 h).
- Professional responsibility: the contractual and extra-contractual liability, the informed consent, euthanasia, certification (1.5 h).
- The laws concerning prescription, possession and use of veterinary drugs (3 h).
- The legislation and the animal welfare: the european and italian legislations, the experimental animals, animals in intensive farming, stray cats and dogs. The animal buse (3 h).
- assessment of defects in the visits of sale (1.5 h).
- the veterinarian as a consultant (CTU) at the Courts of Justice (1.5 h).
- Bioethics and veterinary practice (1.5 h).
- The continuing education programmes (1 h).

Practical lessons
Simulation of:
- how to communicate to owner generic medical information, adverse events during medical procedures (see sudden death of the animal), how to support the howner in making decision of euthanasia (2 h);
- compilation of drug prescriptions (2 h);
compilation of certificates (2 h);
- compilation of clinical records (2 h).
