- D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must
- have knowledge of the anatomy of the horse's eye and understand the ophthalmological examination in the horse
D2 - ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
D3 - AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
The main objective of the course is to provide, through theoretical and practical sessions, the basis for dealing with the knowledge of ophthalmological instruments and the most common surgical techniques in the horse.
D4 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- knowing how to organize, prepare and present a presentation on an article on equine ophthalmology to an audience made up of people of the same level of preparation.
- support a cross-examination with people both of equal preparation and experts in different topics, of a regulatory, scientific nature,
procedural and / or technological,
- demonstrate language properties in oral form, as well as
ability to employ sufficiently appropriate terminology for
a correct approach to the profession, also important for the purposes of interviews
of work.

At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- consult and understand scientific texts, including innovative ones,
bibliographic updates, legislative dictates, in order to use them
in contexts not only usual for the profession, including research, but also original,

- In order to understand and to apply the procedures required in this course, it is necessary to have passed the exams of Veterimanry Surgical Semiotics and Pathology will be required to pass the course with profit.
- Teaching methods
- The ADE is organized as follow:
practical exercise in surgical or ambulatory rooms of the Surgery Unit of the OVUD. According to the number, students will be divided in two or three groups and as a group will take place directly diagnostic procedures on the patient (two hours), the other group will follow the teaching materials (slide) about the different steps to be used to address the surgical disease showed and/or improve the use of the diagnostic/surgical procedures described (two hours) under the teacher supervision. - Other information
- This course includes also complementary didactic activity represented by meetings and seminars with PhD students, interns and students by planning and agreeing with the student during the ADE
- Learning verification modality
- Not applicable. This course considers only the presence at the professional course.
- Extended program
- In the ADE it is planned to teach and have the student do the ophthalmological visit on the horse. Evaluate intraocular pressure; perform various tests: fluorescein, rose bengal and green lissamine; know how to do an ocular ultrasound; examine the ocular fundus.
Evaluate possible injuries and establish medical or surgical treatment. Exercises on eyelids and eyes of cadaver.
