- The course is held within the facilities of the Depaertment of Veterinary Medicine. The students are directly involved in the clinical-diagnostic and therapeutic activities of the acceptance service of small animals, of horse and of food-producing animals.
During practical activities, the student interacts with the veterinarians of the OVUD and also discusses the theoretical aspects of the observed cases.
Each student, supervised by veterinarians and lecturers, will have to personally report on the patient's clinical folders the signaling, the anamnestic data collection and the general objective exams, the outcome and other clinical information. - Reference texts
- Students are required to interact with the Teacher through the UNISTUDIUM portal of the University where, in the space devoted to this course, together with suggestions, recommendations and guidelines given by the Teacher, teaching materials are available in the form of assigned assignments.
- Educational objectives
- The activities are essentially practical and therefore it is expected that the student will acquire interaction skills with animal owners in the presence of structured veterinarians, in anamnestic collection and physical examination of diseased animals. In any case, the "red week basic course" represents only a small part (25 hours) of the time provided for the practical teaching of the course in veterinary medicine and is designed to allow the student to experience an initial "full immersion" in the reality of an acceptance service of a veterinarian hospital. This experience is the first occasion for the student to experience the initial approach to the sick animal by collecting the history by questioning the owner and carrying out the general phisical examination. The minimum learning objective for the "Red Base Week" is the ability to use clinical methodology and to carry out general objective examinations on small animals, on horses and on food producing animalsRegarding the descriptors of the didactic objectives, the course can be summarized as follows:
D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must
- have knowledge of the clinical methods of approaching the sick animal by questioning the owner, observing the animal and identifying particular signs of the disease;
- know the methods of containment of the animal to be visited and the application of the manual procedures for performing the direct physical examination;
- know the characteristics and methods of use of basic clinical instruments (e.g. thermometer, stethoscope, etc.)
D2 - ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training, the student must:
- be able to collect the medical history, be able to identify signs of disease;
- be able to safely approach a sick animal and perform the maneuvers of direct physical examination;
- know how to use basic clinical instruments (e.g. thermometer, stethoscope, etc.)
D3 - AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- identify, among the information reported by the owner, those useful in the course of the anamnestic collection and distinguish normal conditions from pathological ones;
- identify the presence of particular clinical signs;
- describe and quantify the changes detectable in the general physical examination;
D4 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- produce a report on the animals visited and actively participate in clinical briefings by discussing with people of the same level of preparation, presenting their evaluations supported by appropriate arguments;
- demonstrate language skills in both written and oral form, as well as the ability to use sufficiently appropriate terminology for a correct approach to the vocational subjects of the fourth and fifth year of the course
D5 - LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- set up a professional interview methodology with teachers, pet owners and colleagues engaged in clinical activity, such as to ensure the acquisition of always new useful information in clinical practice;
- possess a sufficiently broad mastery of the subject to guarantee an acceptable basis to continue successfully in the study of the professionalizing clinical subjects of the fourth and fifth year of the course - Prerequisites
- The knowledge that the student must possess at the beginning of the activities for this teaching derive from the clinical methodology modules in small and large animals and other teaching courses of the Medical, Surgical and Obstetric Clinic.
To get the most out of this lesson, it is important that the student knows the basic clinical methodology (inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation, and measurements) and possess the theoretical basis and practical skills necessary for carrying out a general objective examination in small Animals, in the horse and in the food producing animals. - Teaching methods
- Direct participation, under the supervision of structured and unstructured teachers and veterinarians, for clinical activities in OVUD
- Other information
- To be admitted to attend the course, you must have the following certificates and requirements:
- Attendance of course on Legislative Decree 81/2008;
- To be covered with anti-tetanical vaccination and present the up-to-date certification, issued by the ASL in charge, at the Didactic Secretariat (Polo Didattico Veterinaria Medicina Veterinaria);
Students must wear green in burgundy color - Learning verification modality
- There is no evaluation in the form of a oral or written exam, but each student will have to prepare a detailed report on the activity. This report must be compiled on UNISTUDIUM according to the instructions contained in the assignment section. The teacher evaluates the report and assigns a score (max 30/30) that is intended to indicate to the student the value of the product but does not have the value of exam grade. Student fitness is evaluated during the practical activity and on the basis of the presented report. Verbalization of fitness is performed periodically for the group of students who have reached the required hours of attendance.
The Activity Tutor will collect the attendance sheets of everyone who has completed all three scheduled shifts, logbooks and booklets one day every week. Booklets and logbooks will be returned to their Students on the following week at the same venue and at the same time. - Extended program
- Practical activities take place in groups of 2 students in shifts defined as follows:
1 daily shift from 8 am to 5 pm - Monday to Friday
Each student must have 3 shifts up to 25 hours of activity for the recognition of no. 1 CFU
Each student at the beginning of each of his turns presents himself to the practicing physician in H24 with the necessary kit (badge, Bordeaux green, phonendoscope, booklet and log book) and sign the attendance sheet.
During the round, under the supervision of Veterinarians, he collaborates in carrying out all the activities related to the clinical examination of animals presented at OVUD and all those already admitted, returning the data to the appropriate fields of clinical reports.
