Contents
The program includes an introductive part in which the general aspects of parasitic diseases e.g. pest-host and environment interactions, environmental and management factors that determine the outset of parasitic diseases, evaluation and predictive elements for parasitic diseases, productive damages, zoonotic aspects and socio-economic importance of parasitic diseases, are treated. Then the systematic part including
protozoans, mycetes, helminthes, arthropods, with particular importance for those having a public health concerns for human beings are discussed.
For each parasitic group, the following aspects are treated: morpho- biology, immunological interactions between parasite and host, pathogenesis and clinical signs, diagnosis and control (therapy and prophylaxis).
There are also discussed issues of application interest such as resistance of anthelminthes drugs, development of vaccines, variation of epidemiological circuits of parasitic diseases due to climate- environmental and socio-economic changes.

Educational objectives
D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY
The student will acquire the basic knowledge related to pathogenetic mechanisms, clinical aspects, anatomopathological alterations, diagnostic approaches in field and under laboratory conditions, as well as the control and / or prevention plans of the most impacting parasitic diseases in Veterinary Medicine and in Public Health.
D2 - ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course the student will have the ability to make a parasitological diagnosis through the most appropriate laboratory techniques; will be able to advise treatment schemes and implement measures to prevent and control parasitic diseases, both individually and collectively, based on biological pest development times and on the parasitic pressure to which animals are subjected.
D3 - AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
At the end of the course the student will be able to manage a parasitosis by deciding which diagnostic techniques to use and by correctly interpreting the results obtained, he will also be able to perform a correct evaluation of the host / parasite / environment relationship in order to control and preventing the spread and consequences of a parasitic disease on the animal population in the first place, but also on the human one.
D4 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course the student must be able to demonstrate language and argumentation properties around problems of a parasitic nature, as well as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job interviews.
D5 - LEARNING SKILLS
The skills acquired with the teaching module of Parasitic Diseases of Domestic Animals will allow the student to participate in the following years in practical training activities both in the Parasitology (see pre-training of Parasitology) and in the clinical one and to be ready to to deal with diagnostic procedures related to parasitic diseases also in external structures.
Prerequisites

Teaching methods
Theory: detailed lessons the parasitic diseases included in the program; the lesson will be attended in a class of the teaching building of the Vet School
Practice: didactic laboratories for the acquisition of the main diagnostic techniques to be applied during suspected parasitic disease; the practical activities will attended in the multidisciplinary laboratories of the old buiding of the vet School
Self-directed learning activities: preparation and presentation of a short lesson on a parasitic disease not explained during the frontal lesson that the students will choice based on their interest and led by the teacher. This activity will be carried out by numerically homogeneous groups of students.
