- Veterinary necropsy technique: objectives and limits, necropsy equipment, precautions and rules; post mortem diagnosis and interpretation of lesions. Post mortem lesions: interpretation and timing of death; basis of forensic veterinary pathology.
Anatomic pathology of respiratory: review of anatomic and functional predisposing factors; lesions affecting nasal cavities, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs; main diseases affecting respiratory system
Anatomic pathology of cardiovascular system: lesions affecting vessels and mostly hearth, including congenital/idiopathic and acquired diseases.
Anatomic pathology of osteoarticular system. Gross findings of the most common diseases involving these systems. - Reference texts

- The main aims of the course are:
Knowledge and understanding: the course aims to give the students the knowledge about the correct autopsy technique, the equipment and safety procedures to apply during necropsies; of the post-mortem changes and their interpretation; of the ancillary techniques to be used together with pathology; of the gross and histological lesions of the respiratory, cardiovascular and osteoarticular systems; of the mechanisms of diseases; of the main anatomo-pathological patterns of the lesion of these systems.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the course’s aim is to make the students able to perform a necropsy with related report; sampling for ancillary tests; identify the pattern of the lesion by gross and histological evaluation of carcasses and tissues, as well as by seeing digital images of the lesions; performing a correct morphological diagnosis.
At the end of the course the student is expected to apply the correct procedures to performing a necropsy, anatomohistopathological examinations of organs or tissues, sampling and managing of laboratory exams.
Making judgements: the aim of the course is to make differential diagnosis among diseases with similar pathological features (morphologic diagnosis), by using adequate ancillary tests.
Communication: the course’s aim is to give to the student a correct terminology for description of the lesions; for filling the form for sending samples to pathology; to communicate with colleagues.
Lifelong learning skills: during the course the students will achieve autonomy in reading literature sources and understanding what is the main information to get to allow solutions of medical problems
In summary, the day-one competences to be achieved in the couirse are:
1) Work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of services.
2) Collect, preserve and transport samples, select appropriate diagnostic tests, interpret and understand the limitations of the test results.
3) Apply principles of bio-security correctly, including sterilisation of equipment and disinfection of clothing.
4) Perform a systematic gross post-mortem examination, record observations, sample tissues, store and transport them.
5) understanding the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment of the common diseases and disorders that occur in all common domestic species.
6) to be aware of other diseases of international importance that pose a risk to national and international biosecurity and trade. - Teaching methods
- The course is organized as follows:
Lectures on all subjects of the course
Practical lessons during which students perform necropsies of carcasses or examinations of viscera from the slaughterhouse
Practical lessons during which the students are asked to describe pathological images
Practical self-directed activities during which students are asked to use multimedial systems and apply problem-solving methods.
Practical lessons at the microscope during which the student evaluate the histological features of the main lesions described.
Practical self-directed activities during which students are asked to focus on a subject of the course by reading a scientific paper and to communicate the results to classmates - Extended program
