Infectious diseases of cats: Coronavirus infection and Feline Infectious Peritonitis; SARS-Cov-2 in domestic animals; Panleukopenia; Feline Respiratory Disease Complex (infection by Feline Herpesvirus, Calicivirus and Chlamydia felis); Poxvirus infection; infection by Mycoplasma haemofelis and haemominutum; Bartonella infection; Feline retroviruses (feline immunodeficiency virus; feline leukemia virus).

Visit of a public kennel and a private one, in collaboration with the veterinary services of the territory of Perugia.

- D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must:
- have general knowledge about the importance of Infectious Diseases, their social and health impact (zoonoses, notifiable diseases, transboundary diseases, emerging infectious diseases);
-know how infectious diseases spread in animal and human populations;
-know the possible evolution that an etiological agent can undergo (emerging infectious diseases) and the causing factors;
-know the main biosecurity measures to be taken in case of infectious diseases;
-know the characteristics of the individual etiological agents of specific Infectious Diseases of dogs and cats;
-know the main characteristics of aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, lesions that characterize a specific infectious disease of dogs and cats, addressed in the program;
-know how to orientate in the panorama of the different Infectious Diseases of dogs and cats and understand their specificities in order to know which is the most appropriate diagnostic test to be applied depending on the clinical and epidemiological situation;
- know the main diagnostic methods, including their limits, applied in Infectious Diseases;
- know the main methods of direct and indirect prophylaxis to be applied in the individual Infectious Diseases of dogs and cats.
-know what core, non-core and non-recommended vaccinations are;
- know the main vaccination protocols in dogs and cats.
D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- know what happens when a notified infectious disease is to be managed;
- understanding of new scenarios that are created with emerging infectious diseases;
- know how to recognize the main clinical signs and the microbiological characteristics of the individual Infectious Diseases addressed during the course;
- know how to apply the most correct diagnostic protocol for a specific infectious disease, depending on the clinical picture and the epidemiological situation;
- know how to interpret the results of laboratory tests specific for infectious diseases and be able to assess the limits of individual tests;
- know how to apply the most appropriate prophylaxis, depending on the specific etiologic agent involved and the epidemiological situation.
- know how to apply the most appropriate vaccination protocol, based on the analysis of the risk / benefit ratio.
D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- know how to recognize the main infectious diseases of dogs and cats, based on clinical signs;
- to know how to read and interpret a diagnostic test related to a clinical case, as seen during the practical activity;
- know how to identify the most appropriate biosecurity measures and vaccination protocols to be applied in different contexts;
- use the knowledge on the microbiological characteristics of an etiological agent to apply the most appropriate diagnostic methods and means of prophylaxis.
D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- know how to organize, prepare and present a speech on some aspects concerning infectious diseases of dogs and cats or topics of more general aspects of infectious diseases (zoonoses, notifiable diseases, transboundary diseases, emerging infectious diseases, diagnostic protocols, vaccination protocols), using a simple but technical terminology;
-support an adversarial process with people of different levels of preparation and experts of different issues;
- demonstrate language properties, as well as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job interviews.
D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
-know where to consult updated information, consult and understand technical scientific texts, bibliographic updates, normative rules, to employ them in contexts usual for the profession and research, but also when new situations arise.
- be sufficiently expert of the subject to guarantee an acceptable basis for continuing professional updating through ongoing lifelong learning. - Teaching methods
- The course is developed in 18 hours face-to-face; 6 hours for practical training (for 4 groups) and 2 hours for clinical rotation (for 12 groups).
Each Infectious Disease of dog and cat is described in a face-to-face lesson.
Seminars about diagnosis of infectious diseases in different veterinary settings and about vaccine protocols and their possible consequences will be performed.
At the end of the course students will visit a public and a private canine and feline shelter. - Extended program
