- Horse breeders are continually working to improve and perfect established breeds and, by selective cross-breeding, to develop new breeds. Today the breeders devote to special equine interests such as showjumping, dressage, racing and so on. The breeder requires information about the physique and functionality of this sport horse in order to reach this breeding goal.
PROGRAM
Meaning of high performance horse: origin and development.
Definition of the breeding goal and standards.
Conformation characteristics and linear scoring.
Health inspections, performance test and sport results.
Database and breeding values for sport and conformation characteristics.
Molecular tests and selection signature.
Selection scheme of sport breeds bred in Italy. - Reference texts
- At the end of each lesson the teacher leaves slides and other material.
- Educational objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to recognize the ideal sport horse and to know the breed selection scheme.
D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must
- have knowledge of the evolution of the sport horse,
- know the Stud Books of the main sport horse breeds,
- know the morphological, performance and health aspects,
- know the selection scheme of sport horse.
D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- evaluate the sport horse,
- explain morphological, performance and health indexes.
D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- assess the morphological and functional quality of an horse for
sport purposes,
- assess the applicability of molecular tests.
D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- organize, prepare and exhibit, to an audience made up of people of
equal level of preparation, a presentation on a sport horse with their own evaluations supported by appropriate
arguments,
- support an adversarial process with people of equal preparation and
experts in different issues, of a regulatory, scientific, procedural and / or
technological nature,
- demonstrate language properties in both written and oral form, as well
as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a
correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job
interviews.
D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- consult and understand scientific texts, even innovative ones,
bibliographic updates, normative dictations, so as to employ them in
contexts not only usual for the profession, including research, but also
originals,
- manage a sufficiently broad mastery of the subject to guarantee an
acceptable basis for continuing professional updating through ongoing
lifelong learning. - Prerequisites
- In order to understand and know how to apply most of the topics described in teaching you must have successfully defended the teachings of Zoology , Physiology , Special Veterinary and Animal Husbandry special and biotechnology applied to livestock production, animal breeding and genetics.

- Theory lessons are alternated with practical training and field trips.

- The evaluation method does not provide evidence but there will be a fitness that comes from the frequency to the course and the debate .
