Educational objectives
The course offers an overview of the Brazilian contemporary fiction, with an eye on the urban prose and so-called "marginal literature", born and developed in the suburbs of the big Brazilian cities.
The knowledge acquired at the end of the course can be applied by the student in a future professional field: in school teaching as a result of qualification processes, in cultural institutions, in publishing and in literary translation.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites needed to understand the contents covered and pursue learning objectives.
Teaching methods
The course consists of classroom lectures on all subjects of the program.
The teacher will encourage the participatory intervention by the students both with the request for any clarifications or with the expression of personal opinions. The project will promote active reception of the course content which, in turn, allow a weighted acquisition of the contents.
Other information
During the course, several activities will take place such as lectures, panel discussions and film screenings in Portuguese on the course topics and other issues related to the Portuguese and Brazilian cultures.
Students should report to the professor for the full schedule of these activities at the beginning of the first and second semesters.
Learning verification modality
The exam consists of an oral interview lasting about half an hour with an open stimulus, with an open answer on the covered topics and it will be aimed at verifying both the understanding and the ability to apply the knowledge discussed during the course.
Both attending and non-attending students will be able to access the oral exam only from the session immediately after the conclusion of the course.
The final evaluation of the oral examination will be calculated in thirtieths.
Extended program
We will propose an analysis and a study on one of the most vital parts of contemporary Brazilian prose, namely that in which the authors establish a critical and conflictual dialogue with society, reflecting the complexity of the current crisis that the great South American country is experiencing . It is a literature that incorporates, from a formal and content point of view, the social framework of the great cities of the country. Short stories of various writers of the so-called Geração Noventa will be analyzed as well as the book Eles eram muitos cavalos by Luiz Ruffatto, published in 2001 and considered change in the contemporary Brazilian fiction.
