Stories and anecdotes are an important part of Heinrich von Kleist's work alongside his rich theatrical production. Written in the years of the Napoleonic wars, when the author was strongly involved in the tragic historical events of the time, these works are striking for the lucid, dramatic and sometimes ironic style, with which certain shocking experiences of the protagonists are narrated. Major issues are covered here, such as the female condition in patriarchal society and the defense of the individual's freedom in front of a fragile legal systems, threatened by the outbreak of constantly lurking violence. Moreover, in the anecdotes the author comes to a paradoxical representation, both tragic and comic, of the human condition.
