- Educational objectives
- At the end of the course students will have acquired in-depth knowledge regarding the assessment of environmental risk and the relationships between exposure to environmental contaminants and the onset of the main infectious and chronic-degenerative diseases. They will also learn about the main strategies implemented to prevent negative effects on human health caused by environmental factors

- Environmental risk factors and risk assessment. Main chronic-degenerative diseases related to exposure to environmental pollutants. Evaluation of carcinogenic risk. Classification of environmental carcinogens. Gene-environment interaction. The use of biological markers in environmental epidemiology.
Air pollution. Main indicators of air quality. Notes on the current regulatory framework concerning air quality. Atmospheric particulate matter. Volatile organic compounds. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Heavy metals. Polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins. Indoor pollution.
Water resources and drinking water. Epidemiology of hydrodiffused diseases. Issues related to the by-products of water disinfection.
Disposal of solid waste and human health. Evaluation of the effects deriving from landfill disposal. Potential health effects of waste-to-energy plants.
