Contents | Didactics of zoology at school and outside the school: methods, approaches and purposes. Some basic zoological concepts for teaching: - biodiversity, with particular reference to its levels, its importance and its threats (the emblematic case of insects) - Taxonomy and phylogeny: the Linnaean taxonomy and modern phylogenetic systematics, the contribution of the phenetic and molecular approach to the current taxonomy (the emblematic case of vertebrate phylogeny). |
Reference texts | Biologia 3. L'evoluzione e la biodiversità. D. Sadava, D.M.Hillis, H.C. Heller, S. Hacker. Zanichelli 2019 |
Educational objectives | At the end of the course It is expected that the students are able to imagine simple educational paths of Zoology aimed at schools of different levels and by referring to fundamental zoological issues such as biodiversity and evolution |
Prerequisites | Students need good knowledge on Zoology (General Zoology and fundamental Taxonomy) |
Teaching methods | Lectures in the classroom and some practical activities. |
Other information | It is advisable to refer to the teaching material provided by the teacher. The schedule of the lessons and the exams are available on the Department's website: http://www.dcbb.unipg.it The teacher can be contacted by e-mail for any need (exam dates, concepts). Additional teaching materials, such as course slides or scientific publications related to the topics discussed, are made available to all students with free access in the uni-studium web site during the course. |
Learning verification modality | Oral exam |
Extended program | The Didactics of Zoology in schools of various Orders and Grade. The Didactics of Zoology outside the schools: the Natural History museums, the CEA, the citizen sciences projects. Basic concepts of animal biodiversity: definition of biodiversity, biodiversity levels, genetic and specific diversity, ecosystem diversity and landscape concept, biodiversity value, direct and indirect use values, non-use values. Animal biodiversity: Insects. Forms and functions of insects, the reasons for an extraordinary evolutionary success, the diversity of insects: the Orders. Basic concepts of phylogenetic Taxonomy: the concept of species, the linneian taxonomy and the evolutionary one. Phylogenetic systematics in a phenetic / morphological and molecular key. The case of the phylogeny of Vertebrates: the linneian classes Pisces, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals and their phylogenetic meaning. |
