- Contents
- Environmental risk factors and their correlations with the main chronic-degenerative
diseases. Evaluation of carcinogenic risk. Air pollution and
public health. Water pollution and public health. Waste management and
public health - Reference texts
- Professione Igienista – Manuale dell’igiene ambientale e territoriale. A
cura di Giorgio Gilli. Casa editrice Ambrosiana - Educational objectives
- At the end of the course students will have acquired in-depth knowledge
regarding the assessment of environmental risk and the relationships
between exposure to environmental contaminants and the onset of the
main infectious and chronic-degenerative diseases. They will also learn
about the main strategies implemented to prevent negative effects on
human health caused by environmental factors - Prerequisites
- None
- Teaching methods
- Face-to-face
- Other information
- The frequency is strongly recommended
- Learning verification modality
- Oral exam on the topics covered during the lessons. 3 main questions will be asked regarding the various environmental matrices to which 10 points each will be attributed, in case of exhaustive answer.
- Extended program
- Environmental risk factors and risk assessment. Main chronic-degenerative
diseases related to exposure to environmental pollutants.
Evaluation of carcinogenic risk. Classification of environmental
carcinogens. Gene-environment interaction. The use of biological markers
in environmental epidemiology.
Air pollution. Main indicators of air quality. Notes on the current
regulatory framework concerning air quality. Atmospheric particulate
matter. Volatile organic compounds. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
Heavy metals. Polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins. Indoor pollution.
Water resources and drinking water. Epidemiology of hydrodiffused
diseases. Issues related to the by-products of water disinfection.
Disposal of solid waste and human health. Evaluation of the effects
deriving from landfill disposal. Potential health effects of waste-to-energy
plants.
Prevention activities for the improvement of environmental and health
conditions. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) and health impact
assessment (HIA).
