Educational objectives
The main aim of this teaching is to provide students with the basic knowledge of analytical chemistry and the basic notions, both theoretical and instrumental, related to techniques and methodologies commonly employed in analytical chemistry laboratories.

Main knowledge acquired will be:

-basic elements for the treatment of experimental errors;
-general principles of qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis (i.e. calibration curves, internal standard, standard addition);
-knowledge of volumetric analysis techniques;
-basic theoretical knowledge and instrumental aspects concerning the chromatographic techniques considered;
-basic theoretical knowledge and instrumental aspects concerning the spectroscopic techniques considered;

The main competence (i.e. the ability to apply the acquired knowledge) will be:

-use of methods for estimation and treatment of experimental errors;
-evaluation of capabilities and limitations of the analytical methodologies and techniques considered.
In order to be able to understand the topics of the Course and to achieve the foreseen learning outcomes it is important to have the basic notions of general chemistry.

Learning verification modality
The exam consists of an oral test. This consists on an interview aiming at ascertain the knowledge level and the understanding capability acquired by the student on the contents as indicated on the program. Moreover, the oral test will serve to verify the ability to correctly apply the theoretical knowledge and to communicate appropriately, organizing autonomously the exposition. The duration of the test varies depending on the performance of the test itself.

General background: units, weight measurements, mixtures and solutions, chemical concentrations. Meaningful digits and error analysis. Basics of statistics. Chemical equilibrium. Acids and bases. Principles of volumetric analysis. Acid-base titrations. EDTA titrations.

Introduction to analytical separations and chromatography. Column efficiency and band broadening. Gas chromatography (GC): principles and instrumentation. Mass spectrometry in gas chromatography (GC-MS). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC): principles and instrumentation. Calibration curves. Internal standard and standard addition. Ion-exchange, size-exclusion and affinity chromatography.

Electromagnetic radiation. Radiation-matter interaction. Transmittance, absorbance and Lambert-Beer law. Spectrophotometry. Vibration normal modes and vibrational frequencies. Infrared spectroscopy. Basics of Raman spectroscopy. Atomic spectroscopy.
