Profile of the programme
The course includes an intense program of lectures and practical traineeships. In order to achieve the didactic objectives, the degree program include a total of 180 CFU (ECTS), 60 for each year of the course, to be carried out through lectures, didactic-practical exercises, seminars, e-learning activities, professionalizing apprenticeships. The course provide adequate preparation both in basic scientific disciplines (chemistry, histology, anatomy, biology) and in professionalizing ones (with particular reference to the areas of microbiology, clinical pathology, pathological anatomy and molecular biology). In the three years of the course, 60 of the 180 ECTS are dedicated to practical training and internship (professionalizing training). This activity is intended for the acquisition of specific professional skills in the work contexts typical of the profession and is carried out under the guidance of specially trained tutors belonging to the specific job profile and in accordance with European standards.
Programme learning outcomes
Graduates will acquire: ¿ Integrate knowledge deriving from theoretical and practical in-depth study of basic and specialized disciplines, with particular reference to the main diagnostic methods and technologies used to explore the nature and extent of structural and functional alterations, on samples obtained by the patient or on the patient himself, by chemical, physical, biological and biomolecular means. ¿ Ability to work in the main areas of diagnosis and research thanks also to the knowledge developed in the work context of the specific profile, which also includes the acquisition of behavioral and interpersonal skills and the development of the ability to face and solve practical and organizational-relational problems, as well as skills in the design and implementation phase of study and/or research plans.
Qualification requirements and regulations
The final test has the status of a qualifying state exam for the professional practice of a Biomedical Laboratory Technician. To be admitted to the degree examination, the student must: 1. have followed all the courses and passed the relevant exams 2. have obtained a total of 180 ECTS divided into 3 years of the course 3. be in a regular position regarding the administrative obligations defined by the University. The degree exam takes place in the two sessions indicated by the law normally in the months of October/November and March/April. The degree exam focuses on: a) the preparation of a paper and the demonstration of practical skills; b) the discussion of a theoretical-applicative experimental paper (Thesis).
Examination regulations and grading scale
The evaluation is normally carried out through an oral or written exam or a combination of both. The assessment of the disciplinary exams is expressed in thirtieths (scale 0-30), the minimum mark is 18/30 and the maximum mark is 30/30. Honors can be added to the maximum mark. The main exam sessions are held in the months of January/February, June/July and September. The evaluation of the final qualification is expressed in hundred and tenths (scale 0-110), the minimum mark is 66/110 and the maximum mark is 110/110. The calculation of the final mark of each candidate takes into account the average of the marks obtained in the disciplinary exams, as well as the quality of the research work of the final paper publicly discussed before a commission. "Honors" (110 cum laude) can be added to the maximum mark if decided unanimously by the Examining Commission
Obligatory or optional mobility windows
The mobility possibilities for outgoing students are provided in the relative calls. The nature and organization of the course favor departures at the third year of the course, with experiences mainly related to the internship activities and to the preparation of the thesis.
Work-based learning
The Internship aims to train the student in laboratory activities related to the following areas: - Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry - Molecular Biology and Biotechnology - Microbiology - Pharmacotoxicology - Clinical Galenic - Immunology - Clinical pathology - Transfusion medicine - Hematology - Genetics - Pathological anatomy - Occupational medicine, Hygiene and food inspection. In each area, the student will learn both the principles of operation of the analytical instrumentation and the methodological bases of each process, as well as the principles of laboratory safety and radiation protection.
Occupational profiles of graduates
Graduates in biomedical laboratory techniques are health workers in the technical-diagnostic area who will be able to carry out laboratory, analysis and research activities with full professional autonomy, as an employee or freelancer, in the public or private sector, in the following areas: Clinical-chemical analysis and clinical pathology Pharmacotoxicology Immunohematology and Transfusion Microbiology Virology Pathological Anatomy (including sector room activities) Legal medicine Medical genetics
