Contents
The course will introduce and discuss the Italian Literature from the beginning to the XVIII century, by focusing and analyzing some representative and exemplary texts. The first part of the program (“institutional part”) will concern the main issues and the critical tools for humanistic and Italian studies, and will study the principal authors and moments of Italian literature from the beginning to XVI Century. The second part of the course (“monographic” or “seminarial part”) will focus the history of pastoral drama, melodrama and tragedy from XVI Century to XVIII Century. We will read “Aminta” by Torquato Tasso, “L’Olimpiade” by Pietro Metastasio and “Mirra” by Vittorio Alfieri”, and some chapters from Alfieri’s autobiography.
Reference texts
(1) history of Italian Literature: "Storia della letteratura italiana", edited by Andrea Battistini, I: “Dalle origini al Seicento”, 2014, pp. 632, ISBN: 978-88-15-25252-4. The part on XVIIIth century will be provided by the teacher.

(2) texts for the institutional part will be indicated at the beginning af the course and partially provided by the teacher.

(3) texts for the second part of the course (Pastoral drama, melodrama and tragedy in XVI-XVIII Centuries from Tasso to Alfieri) are available in several editions.

(4) critical insight of this second part of the course (Pastoral drama, melodrama and tragedy in XVI-XVIII Centuries from Tasso to Alfieri) will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Educational objectives
The course aims to provide critical and historical tools for humanistic studies; a good knowledge of the history of Italian literature and of the principal bibliographic and informatic instruments for humanistic study and research; ability in understanding, analysis, contestualisation of literary texts; cultural, critical and specialized use of language. The course is open to all students and it can be the opportunity to develop the language skills in Italian for not italian students. In the second part of the course (Pastoral Drama, Melodrama and Tragedy XVI-XVIII Century) the debate on the theater is discussed in the perspective of the rebirth of ancient genres; attention is paid to the theoretical discussion (mainly on Aristotle’s “Poetica”); and refers to the historical context.
Prerequisites
Students are required to have principal notions of history and literary culture and an high level in knowledge and mastery of italian language. These preconditions are valid both for attending and not attending students. Knowledge and ability in italian language is mandatory. Students are expected to achieve an italian language proficiency, either by a laboratorial test or by attending a lab (october-november 2018).
Teaching methods
(1) Lectures and readings, with references to documents, texts and critical or historical essays will be offered during the course. The analysis of texts will proceed in the form of comment, contextualization and interpretation.
(2) Figurative and iconographic documents, PowerPoint, photos, videos, and multimedia board.
(3) Experimental laboratory teaching (Project PRO3).
(4) Texts and documents will be posted by the teacher on "Unistudium"
(5) Didactic trip, concerning the subject of the course.

Students are required to achieve an italian language proficiency, either by a laboratorial test (september 2018) or by attending a lab (october-november 2018)
Learning verification modality
The examination includes a written or laboratory part, relative to the first part of the course (indicatively at the beginning of November) and an oral part after the conclusion of the course. It concerns understanding, analysis and comment of italian literary text discussed in the course, and the knowledge of themes, issues and authors both discussed in the course or presented in the bibliography provided in the program. The exam aims to ascertain the knowledge level and the ability of the student in comment and contextualization, critical intelligence, cultural, historical and literary sensibility. It consists on three or four or five demands, according to the situation of the student.
