The course introduces the concepts and key themes of the research methodology into a quantitative and field-based perspective. The proposed theoretical and methodological perspective aims to empirical research as a cognitive process and / or critical investigation of problem-phenomena observed / located in the contexts and aimed at shedding light on a particular (social, communicative, educational) reality through the development of Multi-method approaches, culturally located and rigorous. In particular, we will deepen:
The scientific method in educational research;
Epistemological, methodological, technical-operative, axiological choices;
The stages of research in education: the design of research.
Quantitative research and qualitative research;
Educational Research Strategies;
Data capture techniques and tools;
Data analysis and interpretation of results.
Evaluation scales;
The origins and developments of experimental pedagogy will also be briefly discussed:
- Education Sciences and Educational Research
- Empirical research in education and experimental pedagogy
- The methodological paradigms of empirical research in education (positivistic / quantitative approaches and interpretative / qualitative approaches)
- The basic methodological and conceptual repertoire of educational research (research styles, theories, hypotheses, laws, concepts and constructs, the conceptualization of concepts, indicators, variables, etc.)
Reference texts
1) Each working group (5 students) will have to analyze 5 scientific articles following the directions given during the course (non-attendants, to receive directions, they will have to write an email to the pedagogiasperimentale2015@gmail.com);
2) Each student will have to study a manual of their choice concerning the methodology of educational research (for the preparation of the written test). Recommended Guide: F. Batini, Educational Research Release Notes 03, Thérème editions (beware, do not use previous editions);
3) 1 (one) volume selected from the following:
Batini, Bartolucci, School Dispersion, Publisher Angels (downloadable free of charge);
Bartolucci, Batini, There was once a piece of wood, Angeli publisher (downloadable free of charge)
Welcome G., Univeristy School, Anicia edition;
Burgio G., Adolescence and Violence, Mimesis;
Batini F., Dropout, Fuorionda edition;
Trinchero, Todini, Responsibility and Discomfort, Angels.
Acceptance can be included in the list of other volume offered by the students.
4) The volume "Me and my research: a search on me", Thérème editions (volume to be compiled).
Educational objectives
At the end of the course, each student should:
Being drawing the design of a simple experimental research and not.
To be able to reconstruct, in its main lines, the epistemological debate on research into human sciences.
Be able to use the most common data collection tools (questionnaires, interviews) and know the main procedures for building them.
Learn how to read, construct, analyze the results of assessment scales.
Know how to use spreadsheets for organizing and descriptive data analysis.
Being able to use statistical tools (monovarial statistics and bivariate rudiments) to make calculations on collected data.
Being able to read a research using methods and tools used and being able to judge its degree of transparency and repetition.
Prerequisites
To take part in the course successfully, it is advisable to review some fundamentals of basic mathematics such as fractions, percentages and proportions. For this purpose, the site can be used successfully: http://www.youmath.it which also allows you to do exercises.
The application of these concepts in operational terms will be necessary for the understanding and use of frequency distributions, central trend indices and dispersion indices (monovarial statistics).
Teaching methods
Participatory lesson; Learning through action; Use of movies; Group work; Reality tasks.
Other information
There are voluntary participation exercises that will facilitate the learning of the basic application-statistical component for the technical writing.
To calculate the time weight of the discipline, it should be noted that: The University Credit Certificate (CFU) is the unit of measure of the engagement required for the student and has a "value" of 25 hours. The hours are articulated in 6 hours of classroom or classroom work and 19 individual work (study) or group (activity / study).
Learning verification modality
The exam is evaluated for the attendants through:
- group work of five articles (groups of 5 students) on given format and individual job of filing a volume;
- technical written test (frequency distributions, organization and reading of data, data analysis) - reference text is the Integrated Course Manual (present on Unistudium);
- compilation of self-reflection tool indicated in the reference texts;
- group work of questionnaires administration to students, parents, teachers (questionnaires developed in lesson)
