Educational objectives | The course has the main objective to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge on the main chemical/pharmaco-toxicological aspects and analytical reactions of inorganic compounds described in the Official Pharmacopoeia in force. Main knowledge acquired will be: - Theoretical and practical knowledge related to the suitable and safe behavior in a chemistry laboratory - Theoretical knowledge on the qualitative analysis of inorganic and metalorganic compounds, with particular reference to those reported in the current Official Pharmacopoeia - Practical knowledge related to the main chemical reactions useful for the qualitative detection of the studied compounds - Knowledge about the Official Pharmacopoeia The main skills (ie the ability to apply the acquired knowledge) will be: - Given that this course includes the first laboratory of the master’s degree course, at its end the student will acquire both practical and logic skills to analyze and interpret the chemical behavior of a substance as well as the ability to move safely and with knowledgeably in all laboratory operations. - Ability to identify unknown inorganic or metalorganic compounds by using the most appropriate analytical method - Experience with the instruments and glassware of a chemistry laboratory - Ability to write a chemistry report - Ability to consult the Official Pharmacopoeia The knowledge and practical skills acquired during this first laboratory will be essential to properly attend the next practical courses |
Prerequisites | Students who enter this course should possess good knowledge in the fundamentals of general chemistry, inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry. This knowledge represents a mandatory prerequisite for students planning to follow the course with profit. Thus, to attend this course the student must have successfully passed the exam of General and Inorganic Chemistry |
Teaching methods | The course is organized as follows: - Lectures on all subjects of the course (2 hours per week): use of slides that will be delivered to students in electronic format few days before each lesson; - Exercises in the Educational Laboratory: Students will follow 11 tutorials of four hours each on the main analytical and qualitative reactions for each chemical species studied. The reactions are explained in detail during the lectures; each exercise will be then preceded by a brief explanation that summarizes the work to be done. Continuous teacher-student interaction (questions, clarifications, additional explanations) throughout the duration of the exercises |
Other information | Attendance is compulsory; for theoretical lessons, at least 70% of presences; for the laboratory, no more than two absences Educational Laboratories in Via Elce di sotto; lectures at Padiglione X- via del Giochetto - Polo Biologico |
Learning verification modality | The final exam includes a laboratory test (identification of unknown compounds ) and an oral examination, which consists of an interview about the topics covered during the course and mentioned in the program. The examination is designed to verify the knowledge level and understanding capability acquired by the student on the theoretical and practical aspects related to the qualitative analysis of inorganic and metalorganic compounds, both individually and in complex mixtures, as well as the ability to identify an inorganic active ingredient in a medicinal product. The oral exam will also assess knowledge about the Pharmacopoeia in force, as well as the student communication skills. The duration of the test varies depending on the performance of the test itself (average duration of about 30 min ). To have access to the final oral exam, the student must have successfully passed the exam of Analytical Chemistry |
Extended program | Safety standards and elements of first aid in the laboratory. Illustration of laboratory equipment. Basic analytical technique and procedures. Official analytical methods. Chemical pharmacotoxicological properties and analytical reactions of the major cations (alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, aluminum, silver, zinc, bismuth, titanium, boron, ammonium) and major anions (carbonates and bicarbonates, halide ions, borates, sulfates, sulfites, thiosulphates, phosphates) with particular reference to the compounds described in the Official Pharmacopoeia in force. Clearing of a mixture of compounds. Use of chromatographic techniques. Practical exercises in the laboratory: qualitative analysis for each inorganic substance of pharmaceutical interest studied during the course. |
