Educational objectives
The course of Pharmacotherapy and biopharmaceuticals is the second of three course concerning drug nature and use. The main goal is to provide students with the pharmacological basis for a correct use of different classes of drugs. Pharmacotherapy is the study of the mechanism of drug action that evaluates how the drug interacts with biological systems and how through, this interaction, the drug modifies a given biological function. The main knowledge will be related to: 1) basic knowledge of the mechanism of action of drugs active in the CNS, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal system, endocrine, urinary systems; 2) basic knowledge of the toxicity of the active drugs in the CNS, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal system, endocrine system, urinary system. The knowledge will enable a student to achieve the following skills: 1) understanding the relevance dose-effect responses, 2) avoiding toxic effects 2) rational use of drugs so to achieve maximum efficacy with minimum toxicity.
Prerequisites
The course of Pharmacotherapy and biopharmaceuticals is the second course of three with pharmacological content that the student encounters in his formative years in relation to that discipline. The student who is going to attend the Pharmacotherapy and biopharmaceuticals must have passed the examination of Pharmacokinetics, general Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy that it is extremely important to understand the course content of Pharmacotherapy and biopharmaceuticals and the general objectives of learning. This allows the student to easily understand the path of a drug in the body and the mechanism responsible for the action of the various classes of drugs. The knowledge of these topics is indispensable for the student who wants to follow the course with profit.
Teaching methods
The course consists of classroom lectures on all topics of the course.
Other information
compulsory
Learning verification modality
The exam includes a written test (multiple choice questions) at the end of the course which consists of 30 questions that students must answer in two-hour time, designed to ascertaining the level of knowledge and the understanding on the theoretical contents and methodology in the program and the ability to communicate in writing. The written test can also assess a student's ability to identify the mode of action of drugs and therefore the best treatment in different diseases, allowing for a rational use of drugs so to achieve maximum effect with minimum of side effects.
Extended program
The program includes the study of drugs acting at synaptic and neuroeffector junctions. Drugs that act at the level of the central nervous system, anti-inflammatory agents, cardiovascular drugs, endocrine drugs, drugs that interfere in the uterine motility. Immunosuppressive agents . Biopharmaceuticals, what they are and how they work. Major classes of biopharmaceuticals and their clinical use in tumor diseases, hematologic diseases, endocrine diseases. The program includes the study of drugs acting at synaptic and neuroeffector junctions.
