Contents | The town planning laboratory consists in the elaboration of two projects linked to two different urban contests; usually these contests are neighborhood. The aim is obtaining the capacity to recognize the specifics characters of the different places and elaborating adequate project proposals. The privileged topic is the public space and its requalification. |
Reference texts | It is a practical and project-oriented laboratory that completes the theorical course: because of that, there isn’t a specific bibliography. Despite that, during the course, when topics and specific issue will emerge as relevant for the project or specific students’ interest will emerges, Professor will give many bibliographical references. |
Educational objectives | The main objective of the laboratory is to complete and to develop the different skills that students have reached during their training course; the final result will be the redaction of a project (that is complete in its different profiles: project contents and argumentative - descriptive elements) that is the outcome of a systemic – multiscale -interdisciplinary approach. |
Prerequisites | There aren’t specific prerequisites. It necessary that students have well gained the competences during their training course |
Teaching methods | Students (under the professor guide) will do a walk trough of the area that will be studied; after that, there will be a collective discussion, focus on the main elements that emerged during the inspection, to understand its strengths and weaknesses. Students are divided into different groups and every group will elaborate an own project. During this activity, students will discuss the different phases of the project, with the professor and with the class (these are the “revisions”). The revisions are a fundamental part of the entire activity: they are an occasion to reflect about specific issue, to deepen some Knowledge thanks to bibliographical proposals and to project references. During the course, the group will expose their works in progress to the class, with an open discussion. |
Other information | The materials necessary to draw up the project will be available on the Unistudium platform; there, students could find some bibliographical references or other materials (such as projects drawn for national and international competitions) The Professor will be available according the information published on his web personal page. |
Learning verification modality | For the final evaluation will be used a set of specific criteria. Those criteria will be explained during the first lesson. Every criterion has a specific and different weight (the number in parenthesis): Problematic framework (1) Spatial framework (1) the role in the supra-local context (1) systemically approach (1) coherence between cognitive framework and project proposals (1) intrinsic quality of the project proposal (3) efficacy/adequacy of the representation (1) exposition / argumentation (1) The final evaluation is individual: every student deepens a specific part of the group work according to his/her interests. The final marks is based on the group work and on the individual contribute. |
Extended program | Students should elaborate a project (both in the different contests) that analyzes the urban assets, the role in the supralocal contest, the peculiarities of the places, their characteristics, their strengths and weaknesses. The project should propose some useful solutions for the future, with an incremental approach. The project should privilege the public spaces and their role for the requalification/renewal of the places, giving specific value to elements that usually are underestimated (for example, the ecological dimension) Students will elaborate their projects according their specific interests and attitudes; for example: - They could propose tactical solutions, which are useful for the strategical project elaborated by the group - They could develop a more detailed part of the project, because of its relevance - They could elaborate the argumentative – rhetoric framework of the group project - They could explain (and add elements) the systemic framework of the group project |

Contents | The course illustrates the different approaches to urban project/planning in relation to the various emerging issues, critically illustrating a series of European and American case studies, historically contextualized. In particular, the projects for the city of foundation, urban growth, the ancient centers, the residential district, the greenery, the urban street, the river corridors, the industrial zones. Specific insights regarding objectives, principles, rules, techniques and design devices relating to the theme of the redevelopment/revitalization of the collective space and suburbs of contemporary cities, with particular attention to the requirements inherent to sustainability. |

Teaching methods | The course takes place through: - face-to-face lessons relating to the various topics and case studies, illustrated using specially prepared materials (slides), and accompanied by specific billiographic references - periodic ex tempore classroom exercises on the topics covered in the lectures for checks and self-assessments - collective discussion of research and study materials prepared by students on topics selected by the teacher - discussion in the classroom of topics of particular relevance |

Extended program | he course illustrates and critically discusses the different approaches to urban project/planning in Europe and the USA from the second half of the eighteenth century to the present, through the examination of case studies illustrating the emerging issues in different social and territorial contexts, and in relation to the different technical cultures and decision systems. Analogies and differences, variants and design invariants are specifically presented, specifically retracing the experiences of European rationalism, its variants and critical reinterpretations during the twentieth century. The plans-projects selected concern: the design of the city of foundation, the urban growth project (the zoning technique and its critical review), the reuse of the old center, the residential (public) neighborhood project, the green project urban; the design of (micro) ecological networks, the redevelopment of the urban road, peri-urban river corridors and production, industrial and commercial areas. Specific insights concern the objectives, principles, rules, techniques and design devices related to the related issues - settlement density, as a quality device, urbanity and contrast to land consumption - functional and social mixité, as a quality of life requirement - the soil project and the redevelopment of the open collective space, in particular the residential road and the greenery, in a reticular perspective - the physical and social revitalization of the suburbs of contemporary cities, with particular attention to the recovery of abandoned areas and infrastructures, the significance of the urban margin, the densification of areas with sparse and shapeless urbanization. |
