Educational objectives
After the course the student will be able to use fundamental theory and analysis techniques to solve basic problems in structural mechanics and understand the behaviour of structural elements under different load actions.
The student will be able to determine the support reactions, axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams for a statically determinate plane system of beams and to determine stress fields in a beam according to De Saint Venant's principle.
Prerequisites
Vectorial operations, matrix operations, basic issues of linear algebra, analytic geometry, differential geometry, functions of one or several variables (concept of limit, differentiation rules, integration rules, Taylor series).
Teaching methods
Practical and theoretical classes.
Other information
Disabled students and/or with DSA, can contact the teacher of this course directly (she is the contact professor for disability and DSA of Engineering Department.
Learning verification modality
The exam consists in a in-class test and an oral interview.
The test includes a statically determinate beam system and the determination of principal axes of inertia and stresses in the section of a De Saint Venant solid.
The oral interview is based on two or three theoretical questions.
Extended program
-Mechanics of elastic solids (concepts of stress and strain; elasticity theory)
- Beam theory of linearly elastic isotropic beam subject to extension, flexure, shear and torsion
failure criterion: Von Mises);
- Principle of virtual works;
- Statically determinate beams (classification of beams, types of constraints, types of loads, Statics and kinematics of plane systems of beams, equilibrium equations, internal forces – axial force, shear force, bending moment).
