Educational objectives Knowledge of the essential lines of the History of Christianity (XI-XV Cent.) and the Franciscan history and literature (XIII-XIV Cent.). Ability of critical reading of the sources presented in the lessons.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge (high school) in medieval history. Useful: frequency of Medieval History.
Teaching methods Lessons on the topics covered by the program.
At the end of the course there will be a day of study at the archive and library of the Sacred Convent of Assisi and a guided tour of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.
Other information For the second module, students do not attend replace reading anthology of Franciscan sources with the study of the Writings of Francis of Assisi mentioned in the essays of G. G. Merlo and G. Miccoli and with the reading of the life of St. Francis by Thomas of Celano; for the introduction to this legend, see. the essay by E. Prinzivalli. Non-attending students must consult the teacher at the beginning of the course and before starting the study program (see Office hours in teacher's board in the University website with the function Search people).
Learning verification modality I Module: exemption written at the end of the lessons of the first module for the Assessment of the program carried out. II module: oral exam sessions appeal to the verification program on the topics of the second module. The tests are designed to test the knowledge / basics presented in the course of verifying the critical skills and methods of presentation of the main issues addressed and their sources.

The Crusades and Islam. Heresies and Inquisition. II module: Franciscan historiography and the "Franciscan question". Francis of Assisi and the Order of Friars Minor: from 'fraternitas' to institution of religious Order. Introduction to the Writings of Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan hagiography of the thirteenth and fourteenth Centuries.

Educational objectives Knowledge of the essentials of the History of Christianity with particular reference to the Italian reality (16th-18th centuries); acquisition of specific historiographical vocabulary; consolidation of notions of historical research methodology.
Prerequisites It is very helpful, in order to in understand the topics discussed in the lectures and textbooks, to have passed the courses of Medieval History and Early Modern History.
Teaching methods Lectures with PowerPoint presentations; collective work on reading and commenting sources; class discussion on specific readings and themes.

– Students in the “Corso di Laurea Triennale in Lettere may acquire an additional 3 cfu (to be recognized among the 6 cfu of "Further Knowledge") by writing a written paper on a topic related to the contents of the course and agreed upon with the lecturer. The CFU will be recognized upon positive evaluation of the paper by the lecturer. The paper, which should be a maximum of 10 pp. of 2500 characters, should critically employ the bibliography and include footnotes and a final bibliography.
Learning verification modality Students' acquired knowledge and critical skills will be tested through an oral examination, which will consist of a 20-30 minutes interview on the topics discussed in the course.

Extended program The course will provide a comprehensive overview of the history of Christianity in the early modern age, from the Protestant Reformation and the reshaping of Roman Catholicism to the beginning of the process of secularization of society triggered by the eighteenth-century reforms and, even more so, by the revolutionary and Napoleonic ages. During the lectures, the history of sanctity and cults in the centuries under consideration will also be explored in depth, with a specific focus on the progressive tightening of control strategies implemented by the hierarchies of the Catholic Church both in the area of devotional practices and in that of canonization procedures.
