Educational objectives
At the end of the course students will have:
-gained hands-on experience in a range of practical skills and methodologies relevant to biological research;
-appreciated and be practised in the numerical skills necessary to process, analyse and interpret experimental data
-understood the principles of experimental design and safe use of materials and equipment in a laboratory context
Teaching methods
Practical activity in the laboratory includes a brief introductory lecture which will explain the experimental protocol that all students must follow. Students will carry out experiments individually or in small groups and, at the end, the experimental data obtained will be subject of comparative analysis and discussion.
Learning verification modality
In order to obtain the achievement of credits (2 CFU-24 hours), students must attend 80% of total of laboratory activities. Attendance will be verified through procedures such as signatures and role-calling.
Extended program
The course includes laboratory experiences in which common methods used in biological experiments are discussed, by referring in particular to the content of the teachings of the third year. Experiences will be carried out regarding:
-Preparation of cultured cells for electrophysiological studies. Recordings of ionic currents through membrane channels. Data analysis and inferences on the kinetics of ion channels.
-Extraction, quantification of photosynthetic pigments and visible absorption spectra for chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. Rates of electron transport in the thylakoid membranes.
- Recombinant DNA Technology: purification and quantification of Nucleic Acids
Cloning and recovery of DNA.
- Sampling and analysis procedures for the examination of some chemical and microbiological parameters in drinking and mineral waters in relation with the potability requirements.
- Methods for determination of body composition for the evaluation of nutritional status
