Professor's lecture notes - Educational objectives
- Knowledge and understanding: the course provides the theoretical and practical tools to approach the study of the mechanism of an organic reaction, so students at the end of the path will have learned the concepts, experimental methods and strategies used to investigate the mechanism of reaction. In particular, the main knowledge gained will be in the following areas: kinetic and non-kinetic methods, reactive intermediates, linear free energy correlations, isotope effects, effects of the medium.
Acquired skills: students at the end of the course will be able to undertake the study of the mechanism of an organic reaction. In particular, they will be able to determine what data you need to capture and process for identifying an unknown mechanism. The attainment and understanding of reaction mechanisms allow the student to solve problems of organic chemistry, to predict the outcome of chemical transformations, face in a critical way the design of the synthetic sequences necessary for the preparation of organic compounds. - Prerequisites
- The achievement of the first degree in chemistry fully meet the prerequisites for the understanding of the topics covered in this teaching. In the other cases basic knowledge of organic chemistry, the kinetics and thermodynamics are indispensable .
- Teaching methods
- The course is organized as follows:
-lessons in classroom on the topics of the course; at the end of each topic are provided on the blackboard exercises that are designed to facilitate, increase and improve learning; the lessons are done using Power Point and blackboard.
-1 guided exercise at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, preceded by a lesson in classroom presentation. - Learning verification modality
- Verification of learning involves an oral test. This test aims to ascertain whether the student has acquired and is able to apply the basic knowledge, to relate the structural properties and the reactivity of the organic compounds and to express themselves in the appropriate language. This test allows him to get a maximum score of 30/30.
- Extended program
- 1-Non-kinetic methods for the study of mechanisms- Product analysis and reaction stoichiometry. Study of reaction intermediates: isolation, capture and experimental characterization. Stereochemical and isotopic labeling experiments in the study of reaction mechanisms. "Crossover" experiments.
2- Application of chemical kinetics to the study of mechanisms - Basics of chemical kinetics: summary of the main kinetic equations, type of reactions, approximation of the steady state and activation parameters. Relationship between kinetics and mechanism. Experimental methods for speed measurement. Use of kinetic isotopic effects in mechanistic studies. Acid and basic catalysis and related experimental investigation. Theory and practice of structure and reactivity relationships. Examples of application of kinetic methods.
3-Mechanism of electron transfer reactions.
4-Laboratory activity: Use of analytical techniques for the determination of parameters (kinetic or thermodynamic) useful in the study of the mechanisms of organic reactions.
