- Provide the pathogenetic bases underlying the main pathologies of the digestive system in order to understand the most appropriate techniques and technologies necessary for an adequate diagnosis and any new therapeutic approaches.
- Prerequisites
- Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system and of the different laboratory techniques.
- Teaching methods
- The course is structured with oral lectures and practical activities in the Gastroenterology laboratory
- Learning verification modality
- The student is evaluated by oral exam that will take place at the end of the course.
Two exam sessions are scheduled for each month in January and February, then in June, July and September. A further session will be scheduled during the Christmas and Easter holidays.
The oral exam consists of a discussion lasting about 30 minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding achieved by the student on the theoretical and methodological contents provided during the course. - Extended program
- Introduction to the course, diagnostic methodologies and tools for the study of the digestive system diseases. Pathophysiology of the esophagus, Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease GERD), Barrett's Esophagus, cancers of the esophagus.
Pathophysiology of the stomach, acute and chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori-related diseases, gastric cancers.
Pathophysiology of intestinal absorption. Celiac disease.
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD).
Pathophysiology of the liver. Acute and chronic hepatitis. Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) and Non Alcoholic StaeatoHepatitis (NASH)
Autoimmune liver diseases. Hepatocellularcarcinoma (HCC).
