Contents
The program covers the main topics of General and Inorganic Chemistry: structure of the atom, chemical bonds, solutions, pH of acids and bases, salt hydrolysis and buffer systems. Organic Chemistry: structure and chemical properties of alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acid amines and carboxylic acid derivatives. Structure and characteristics of carbohydrates. Lipids. Amino acids and protein. Nucleotides and nucleic acids

The main competence will be to have a general knowledge necessary to address the Biochemistry lessons

Basic knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry and mathematics studied for the examination of access to the degree course

The course is organized in lectures on all the topics of the program; during the lessons the student is encouraged to intervene for the clarification request

Atom structure: Nucleus and atomic orbitals Periodic table of the elements. Stable and radioactive isotopes. Mole and Avogadro number. Covalent and ionic chemical bonds. Electronegativity of the elements and polarity of the molecules. Hybridization of orbitals and geometry of molecules. Resonance and links to delocalized electrons. Intermolecular bonds. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds. States of aggregation of matter; internal pressure and condensation process of real gases, changes in status. Properties of liquids and solutions. Unit of concentration of solutions, vapor pressure, surface tension, osmotic pressure. Electrolytes and chemical equilibria in solution. Acids and bases. Calculation of the pH of solutions of acids, bases and salts. Acid-base buffers. Laws of chemical kinetics and their use in the biochemical-clinical laboratory. Oxidation-reduction processes of biomedical interest.
Structure and nomenclature of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons. Conformational stereoisomerism. Geometric configurational stereoisomerism. Main reactions of the different classes of hydrocarbons: substitution and addition reactions. Optical stereoisomerism: Fischer convention and R / S convention. Structure and chemical properties of the functional groups: Alcoholic, thiol and phenol, Ethereal and thioethyl, Amino, Carbonyl, Carboxylic, ester and amide. Heterocyclic compounds. Thermodynamics of reactions.
