Knowledge of the fundamentals and methods of genetic biotechnologies applied to agricultural plants and animals. The course deals with three main topics: techniques for genomic DNA analysis and biodiversity characterization; recombinant DNA techniques for plant breeding; genetics biotechnology laboratory

Educational objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge of the techniques and the methods of genome analysis using molecular markers, including their application for marker-assisted selection. In addition, the genetic engineering techniques for plant breeding will be presented; their main application will be discussed.
The students will have the opportunity to apply the lab techniques for DNA purification, quantification, amplification and analysis.
Prerequisites
The students should have passed the Agricultural genetics exam
Teaching methods
The course is organized as follows: lectures on all topics of the course supported by video projections, that will be timely provided to the students. In addition, students will carry out laboratory activities as detailed in the extended program. Field trips will be organized if possible.

Learning verification modality
A final oral exam (about 45 minutes) which will also assess the knowledge acquired during the laboratory experiences.

Extended program
Nature and origin of genetic diversity in living beings. From morphological to molecular markers; identification of variations in the DNA sequence. Application of DNA Polymerase chain reaction. Molecular markers, different classes of markers and their classification. AFLP, SSR and SNP markers. Molecular markers for crops characterization.
Construction of genetic maps. Linkage groups attribution to chromosomes. DNA sequencing: classical and next generation sequencing technologies. Strategies for whole genome sequencing.
Genetic engineering of plants. Indirect and direct methods. Transgenic plants in plant breeding. Case studies and applications. Genetically modified plants and food safety.
Animal biotechnology as an operational tool for genetic improvement.
Introduction to the biotechnology lab techniques. DNA extraction from tomato plant tissue, DNA quantification. Electrophoretic separation of DNA on agarose gel. PCR amplification of the locus determining resistance to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV). Direct amplification from eggplant tissue and analysis of related data by sequencer analysis.
