Citogenetica vegetale-Egizia Falistocco-Patron Editore. - Educational objectives
- The main objective of this course is to provide knowledge of chromosome organization and the role and function of chromosomes in the process of heredity. The students should demonstrate to understand interconnections between the chromosome behavior and plant reproduction.
- Prerequisites
- In order to be able to understand the matter of the course the student is required to have basic knowledge on Botany and Chemistry. Is also useful for the student to have the capability to analyse and connect the different biological aspects limked to plant reproduction.
- Teaching methods
- Theoretical lessons and practical training.
- Other information
- Knowledge of the English Language.
- Learning verification modality
- The oral test consists on an interview of 30-40 min aiming to ascertain the knowledge level on the main topics of fundamental Genetics. Great importance will be given to the capability of the students to analyze and connect the chromosome beheviour and plant reproduction. The knowledge of the advanced technologies applied to the grapevine breeding will be assessed. The use of an appropriate scientific language is considered.
- Extended program
- The eukaryotic genome. The nucleic acids: DNA, RNA. Structure and function of DNA. Replication and transcription. The genome size. The repetitive DNA. The eukaryotic chromosome with particular attention to centromere, telomere, nucleolar organizer. The role of chromosomes in the transmission of the genetic information. Mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis and cell cycle. Meiosis and recombination. The Mendel's laws. Segregation and recombination. Self-fertility and pure lines. Vegetative reproduction and clones. Basic information on molecular technique used to characterize the grapevine genotypes. The quantitative characters. The experiments of Johannsen. Influence of environmental factors on phenotype. The heritability. The new technologies of the grapevine breeding.
