Reference texts AUER-STICK. Equine surgery. 5° ed., 1882 pagg., 1000 ill., Elsevier
Educational objectives D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must orient himself in the interpretation of a clinical surgical picture following the outline of the clinical visit
D2 - ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
at the end of the training activity the student must:
identify the most common surgical pathologies
propose the most suitable therapies in different situations
D3 - AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
after the learning phase, the student must be able to evaluate which therapy he would propose in the specific case
D4 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
the student must describe the clinical case from anamnesis to therapy with language properties and accuracy
D5 - LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training, the student must be able to:
- consult and understand scientific texts, including innovative ones, bibliographic updates, regulatory provisions, in order to use them in contexts that are not only usual for the profession, including research, but also original ones
possess a sufficiently broad mastery of the subject to ensure an acceptable basis for continuing professional development throughout the life span, through continuous continuous training. the student must know the correct clinical methodology in relation to cases of surgical interest.
know-how:
the student must be able to effectively and correctly put the theoretical notions acquired into practice
Teaching methods Practical training in OVUD
Extended program The course aims to deepen the knowledge on musculoskeletal pathologies of equidae, with particular reference to diseases of surgical interest of the tendons, bones and joints. The surgical principles and surgical techniques of the integumentary system, as well as the urogenital system, are discussed and examined. During the course, thoracic surgery techniques and the possible pathophysiological implications of cardiopulmonary diseases are examined. at the beginning the anatomical and functional aspects of the gastrointestinal tract of horses are illustrated. This is followed by in-depth discussion of the pathological mechanisms and possible complications of gastrointestinal obstruction, including reperfusion injury, peritonitis, adhesion formation, and colic syndrome in general. Furthermore, the importance of the course consists in the in-depth knowledge of gastrointestinal surgical problems in horses in order to develop an adequate treatment plan.

Contents This course provides specialized training in the anatomic, physiologic, and pathologic process of musculoskeletal diseases, integumentary system, urogenital surgical procedures. Normal anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system in carnivores and herbivores is presented initially. Assessment and management of clinical cases reported.Practical activities to be carried out in relation to clinical cases reported at the veterinary teaching hospital Section surgery. Evaluation and patient preparation, interpretation of radiographic, ultrasound, CT, relating to clinical cases. Exercises in operating theatre of the OVUD. Students according to the number will be divided into two groups, large and small animals and each group will play directly on the patient diagnostic procedures and / or surgical procedures acquired in previous years.
PROGRAMThis course provides specialized training in the anatomic, physiologic, and pathologic process of musculoskeletal diseases in animals, with special emphasis on surgical diseases of tendons, bones, and joints. There are also largely discussion format andexamines surgical principles and surgery of the integumentary system. It is designed to review and discuss urogenital surgical procedures in animals and the rational basis for them. Pathophysiology will be stressed. The course provides specialized training in thoracic surgery techniques and application and discusses patho-physiologic implications of cardiopulmonary diseases. Normal anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system in carnivores and herbivores is presented initially. This is followed by in-depth discussion of the pathophysiological mechanisms and sequelae of gastrointestinal obstructions including reperfusion injury, peritonitis, adhesions, and short bowel syndrome. The emphasis of this course is development of advanced understanding of surgically relevant gastrointestinal problems in carnivores and herbivores that lead to appropriate decision making.
